The walls were covered with faded paintings whose colors had almost disappeared. Their subjects were impossible to recognize. Perhaps they portrayed forgotten kings, wandering pilgrims, or families who had once laughed beneath the same roof centuries ago. An old clock hung on the wall. Its hands never moved. Yet somehow time continued to pass. This strange contradiction seemed to challenge everything I believed.
