Introduction /
English
August carries a special emotional meaning in India.
It is the month when memories of freedom become particularly powerful. The national flag appears everywhere, schools prepare Independence Day programmes, children rehearse patriotic songs, and historical personalities return to the imagination of a new generation.
But freedom is more than a word.
Political independence is one dimension of freedom. The deeper question is what freedom means to an individual, to society, and to the human conscience.
What happens when power becomes greater than justice?
What happens when fear becomes stronger than conscience?
What happens when cruelty becomes normal?
These questions allow literature to travel beyond ordinary history.
This article therefore presents an imagined literary episode inspired by Maharana Pratap.
It is not presented as a newly discovered historical event.
The particular August oath and the gathering involving the Suri community described here are part of the writer's imagination.
Historically, Maharana Pratap was the ruler of Mewar and is remembered for resisting Mughal expansion under Akbar. The Battle of Haldighati in 1576 became one of the most famous episodes associated with his life.
Literature, however, can ask:
What if, in an imaginative Independence Day story, Maharana Pratap had gathered people together and asked them not merely to defend a kingdom, but to take an oath against cruelty, injustice and harassment?
That is the doorway through which this story begins.
Chapter One: The Night Before the Oath /
English
It was an August night.
The mountains of Mewar stood silently beneath the dark sky.
There were no electric lights.
No modern cities.
No loudspeakers announcing Independence Day.
No national flag flying above government buildings.
Yet, in this imagined story, freedom was already alive.
It lived in the heart of a warrior.
It lived in the eyes of a farmer.
It lived in the silent prayer of a mother.
It lived in the dignity of a person who had suffered humiliation but refused to surrender his self-respect.
Among those mountains stood Maharana Pratap.
He looked toward the hills.
Those hills had seen kingdoms rise and disappear.
They had seen rulers who believed their power would last forever.
They had also seen ordinary people suffer because of the ambitions of powerful rulers.
Pratap understood something profound:
A kingdom is not merely a fort. A kingdom is its people.
A ruler may possess gold and still be poor.
A ruler may possess a huge army and still be weak.
A ruler may command obedience without earning respect.
In this imagined story, Pratap believes that true strength is not measured by the number of soldiers standing behind a king.
It is measured by how many frightened people can stand without fear because they believe their dignity will be protected.
That night, Pratap was therefore thinking not only about war.
He was thinking about justice.
Chapter Two: The Gathering /
English
As the night deepened, people began arriving.
Some were warriors.
Some were farmers.
Some belonged to local communities who knew the forests and mountains better than any invading army.
In this fictional episode, members of the Suri community were among them.
Their presence is symbolic and literary.
It is not being claimed as a historically documented gathering with Maharana Pratap.
They came because they had heard that Pratap wanted to speak about something greater than victory.
An elder approached him.
“Why have you called us?”
Pratap looked at him.
“Because a kingdom cannot survive if its people live in fear.”
The elder remained silent.
Pratap continued:
“Fear is not created only by armies. It can also be created by humiliation, injustice, harassment and abuse of power.”
Everyone listened.
“Tonight, I do not ask you to swear hatred against anyone.”
The crowd became silent.
“I ask you to swear something more difficult.”
“What?”
“To reject cruelty.”
The words were simple.
But sometimes the deepest philosophy hides inside simple words.
Chapter Three: The Meaning of an Oath /
English
An oath is not merely a sentence spoken before witnesses.
It is a promise made to one's conscience.
People take oaths before rulers, courts, sacred texts, flags and nations.
But the strongest oath is the one taken before oneself.
Other people may never discover whether we broke it.
Our conscience knows.
In the imagined episode, Pratap raises his hand.
“Repeat after me.”
“I shall not accept cruelty as justice.”
“I shall not call injustice justice merely because a powerful person commands it.”
“I shall not humiliate the weak.”
“I shall not participate in harassment.”
“I shall not allow fear to destroy another person's dignity.”
“And I shall remember that courage without justice can become another form of cruelty.”
The final sentence creates silence.
Perhaps it is the most important part of the oath.
Resistance does not automatically make someone righteous.
A person can fight one form of oppression and later become an oppressor.
A revolution can remove one tyrant and create another.
Therefore, resistance needs a moral boundary.
Freedom must never become permission to harm others.
Chapter Four: Maharana Pratap and Resistance /
English
Maharana Pratap's historical legacy is deeply connected with resistance.
His struggle is remembered in the context of Mewar's political autonomy and resistance to Mughal expansion.
The Battle of Haldighati in 1576 became one of the most famous episodes associated with his life.
But resistance does not always mean war.
A person can resist by refusing to lie.
A teacher can resist discrimination.
A parent can resist hatred by teaching compassion.
A citizen can resist corruption.
A journalist can resist propaganda by seeking evidence.
A student can resist injustice responsibly.
A leader can resist cruelty by refusing to misuse authority.
The deepest resistance sometimes begins before a sword is drawn.
It begins when the mind refuses to surrender.
Chapter Five: Power and the Individual /
English
This imagined story does not need to turn historical figures into simple heroes and villains.
History is more complicated than that.
Akbar was a major Mughal emperor, and relationships between the Mughal Empire and Rajput rulers included both conflict and political negotiation.
The conflict involving Maharana Pratap was connected with questions of sovereignty, political autonomy and submission.
This leads to a deeper question:
What should an individual do when political power demands submission?
Sometimes negotiation prevents bloodshed.
Sometimes cooperation protects people.
Sometimes compromise saves lives.
But sometimes compromise becomes surrender of principles.
The difficulty lies in knowing the difference.
Maharana Pratap's enduring image of resistance emerged from his refusal to accept what he believed would compromise Mewar's political independence.
Yet resistance carried an enormous human cost.
Chapter Six: The Price of Freedom /
English
Freedom sounds beautiful when spoken from a stage.
It is much harder to live.
Freedom can require sacrifice.
Justice can require courage.
Resistance can require hardship.
The story of Maharana Pratap continues to inspire because it is associated with perseverance under difficult circumstances.
But suffering itself is not automatically noble.
War is painful.
Poverty is painful.
Displacement is painful.
Sacrifice is painful.
The deeper lesson is that human beings sometimes endure suffering because they believe something more valuable than comfort is at stake.
That something may be dignity.
Justice.
Freedom.
Or the right to determine one's own future.
Chapter Seven: The Suri Community in the Imagined Episode /
English
In this imagined episode, the Suri community represents collective conscience.
They are not presented as a historically documented military alliance with Maharana Pratap.
They symbolize ordinary people who understand that injustice rarely remains limited to one person.
If one person is humiliated today, another may suffer tomorrow.
If harassment becomes normal, fear becomes normal.
If cruelty becomes entertainment, compassion becomes weakness.
Therefore, people from different backgrounds gather around the same moral principle:
Human dignity belongs to every human being.
Chapter Eight: The Young Boy's Question /
English
A young boy was standing among the crowd.
He finally asked:
“Rana ji, if we promise not to be cruel, what should we do when someone is cruel to us?”
Pratap answered:
“First, protect the innocent.”
“Second, seek justice.”
“Third, do not allow anger to turn you into the same thing you oppose.”
The boy asked:
“Is that not difficult?”
“Yes.”
“Then why should we promise it?”
“Because easy promises are rarely valuable.”
The lesson was simple:
Courage does not mean having no fear. Courage means refusing to let fear control your conscience.
Chapter Nine: The Many Faces of Cruelty /
English
Cruelty does not always appear on a battlefield.
It can appear in ordinary life.
A powerful person can humiliate someone weaker.
Harassment can be disguised as humour.
Discrimination can be disguised as tradition.
Exploitation can be disguised as business.
Bullying can be disguised as friendship.
Silence can be disguised as neutrality.
Even the language of justice can sometimes hide revenge.
Therefore, the imagined oath asks everyone to examine themselves:
Are you certain that you are not slowly becoming what you claim to oppose?
Chapter Ten: Power and Justice /
English
Power itself is not evil.
Governments need authority to protect citizens.
Courts need authority to enforce law.
Societies need leadership.
The problem is not power.
The problem is power without accountability.
A king may be powerful.
An emperor may be powerful.
A political leader may be powerful.
A wealthy person may be powerful.
But power becomes dangerous when a person begins to believe that ordinary moral rules no longer apply to him.
Therefore, the imagined oath contains another principle:
No person should become so powerful that justice becomes powerless before him.
Chapter Eleven: The Meaning of Independence Day / الفصل الحادي عشر: معنى يوم الاستقلال
English
Maharana Pratap lived centuries before modern India's independence.
His struggle belonged to the history of Mewar.
India's independence movement belonged to a much later historical period and involved a vast range of people and movements.
Therefore, Maharana Pratap's struggle should not be presented as the same historical event as India's independence movement.
But literature can create a symbolic connection.
Freedom is a timeless human aspiration.
Mewar's political autonomy and India's modern independence were different historical questions.
Yet both can lead us to a philosophical question:
What does it mean when people believe they should have a voice in determining their own future?
That question remains relevant across centuries.
Chapter Twelve: August 15 and the Imagined Oath /
English
Imagine the story moving symbolically from the sixteenth century into the modern era.
The old hills disappear.
The fort becomes a memory.
Torches become modern lights.
The ancient gathering becomes an Independence Day ceremony.
A child stands before the national flag.
The child asks:
“Did Maharana Pratap fight for India in the modern sense?”
The teacher answers:
“No. He lived centuries before modern India's independence. His struggle belonged to Mewar. But his courage can inspire us.”
“What should we learn from him?”
“Not hatred.”
“Not revenge.”
“Not domination.”
“Learn courage.”
“Learn perseverance.”
“Learn dignity.”
“Learn responsibility.”
The child looks at the flag.
For a moment, the August sky seems connected to the ancient mountains.

Chapter Thirteen: The Oath Reborn /
English
The imagined oath is spoken again.
But now it is not spoken by warriors.
It is spoken by students.
“I shall respect the dignity of every human being.”
“I shall oppose cruelty.”
“I shall not participate in harassment.”
“I shall not support injustice simply because it benefits me.”
“I shall not use freedom as an excuse to harm another person.”
“I shall speak against wrongdoing responsibly.”
“I shall respect differences.”
“I shall protect the vulnerable.”
“I shall remember that courage requires responsibility.”
“And I shall understand that my freedom becomes meaningful when I respect the freedom of others.”
The sword has disappeared.
The flag remains.

Chapter Fourteen: From Sword to Conscience /
English
The world has changed enormously since Maharana Pratap's time.
Modern societies depend upon constitutions, laws, courts, institutions, elections, education and civic responsibility.
Therefore, modern resistance to injustice should generally be lawful and peaceful.
A sword may dominate a battlefield.
But it cannot build a just society.
A just society requires institutions.
It requires education.
It requires accountability.
It requires empathy.
It requires the courage to admit mistakes.
In this imagined transformation:
The warrior's sword becomes the citizen's conscience.
The fortress becomes the constitution.
The battlefield becomes public life.
The oath becomes civic responsibility.
Chapter Fifteen: What Maharana Pratap Can Mean Today /
English
Different people remember Maharana Pratap in different ways.
For some, he represents Rajput honour.
For others, resistance.
For others, determination.
For others, sacrifice.
For others, courage.
This literary interpretation adds another possibility:
He can represent the refusal to surrender one's moral agency.
This does not mean that every decision made by a historical ruler should be copied today.
History is not an instruction manual.
Historical figures lived within circumstances very different from ours.
We can honour their courage while understanding their historical context.
The value that remains especially meaningful here is moral courage.
Chapter Sixteen: Courage and Anger /
English
Anger is easy.
Courage is difficult.
Anger says:
“Destroy the enemy.”
Courage asks:
“What is the right response?”
Anger wants immediate satisfaction.
Courage considers consequences.
Anger wants victory.
Courage wants justice.
Anger divides the world into friends and enemies.
Courage remembers that an opponent is still a human being.
This distinction is essential for an Independence Day message.
Patriotism should not teach hatred.
It should teach responsibility.
A nation becomes stronger when its citizens love their country without needing to hate another country, religion, community or people.
Chapter Seventeen: The Philosophy of Freedom /
English
Freedom has several dimensions.
Freedom from oppression.
Freedom from injustice.
Freedom from humiliation.
Freedom to think.
Freedom to speak responsibly.
Freedom to learn.
Freedom to work.
Freedom to participate in society.
And freedom for responsibility, creativity, compassion and human development.
The last dimension is often forgotten.
People want freedom from control, but freedom also requires self-control.
A person who cannot control hatred can misuse freedom.
A person who cannot control greed can exploit freedom.
A person who cannot control cruelty can turn freedom into oppression.
Therefore:
Freedom without responsibility is incomplete freedom.
Chapter Eighteen: Why the August Episode Matters /
English
Why place the imagined oath in August?
Because symbolism can sometimes express an idea more powerfully than chronology.
Maharana Pratap belongs to the sixteenth century.
Modern India's Independence Day belongs to August.
Putting them together as literal history would create an error.
Putting them together symbolically creates literature.
The story does not claim that Maharana Pratap lived during India's modern independence movement.
Instead, it allows his historical courage to speak to modern ideas of freedom and dignity.
That distinction protects historical integrity while preserving creative imagination.
Chapter Nineteen: The Imagined Final Speech /
English
In the final scene, Pratap stands before the people.
The night is ending.
The eastern sky begins to brighten.
He says:
“Remember this: a kingdom can be lost and regained. A fort can fall and rise again. Wealth can disappear and return. But once a people surrender their conscience, rebuilding becomes much harder.”
He continues:
“Do not measure courage only by victory in battle.”
“Measure it by the ability to remain humane when you possess power.”
“Do not measure strength only by the number of soldiers you command.”
“Measure it by the number of vulnerable people who can sleep without fear because of your conduct.”
“And never confuse revenge with justice.”
The sun begins to rise.
The people lower their hands.
The oath is complete.
Chapter Twenty: The Sunrise of Freedom /
English
A sunrise is a beautiful symbol of freedom.
Darkness does not disappear because someone orders it to.
Light appears gradually.
Freedom can work in the same way.
One person speaks honestly.
Another rejects discrimination.
Another protects someone facing harassment.
Another refuses corruption.
Another teaches compassion.
Another chooses dialogue over hatred.
Each action may seem small.
Together they create a culture.
And culture can become stronger than fear.
Chapter Twenty-One: The Independence Day Lesson /
English
Independence Day should not only be a celebration of the past.
It should also be a question about the present.
Are we worthy of the freedom we inherited?
Do we protect the dignity of others?
Do we tolerate bullying?
Do we remain silent when injustice benefits us?
Do we turn political disagreement into personal hatred?
Do we use social media responsibly?
Do we respect people who are different from us?
These questions make Independence Day meaningful.
The national flag is not merely decoration.
It is a reminder.
A nation is made of people.
Therefore, how we treat people is also part of how we treat the nation.
Chapter Twenty-Two: The Three Enemies /
English
The imagined Maharana Pratap identifies three enemies:
Cruelty.
Injustice.
Fear.
Cruelty destroys compassion.
Injustice destroys trust.
Fear destroys courage.
But there is another hidden enemy:
Indifference.
A cruel person can cause suffering.
An unjust person can create inequality.
A frightened person can remain silent.
But an indifferent society allows all three to continue.
Therefore, the oath must contain compassion.
Not merely emotional compassion.
Responsible compassion.
The kind that asks:
“What can I do?”
Chapter Twenty-Three: The Ordinary Person's Oath /
English
Moral responsibility does not belong only to kings and warriors.
An ordinary citizen has enormous moral power.
A shopkeeper can reject exploitation.
A teacher can reject humiliation.
A parent can reject prejudice.
A student can stand beside a bullied classmate.
A worker can refuse dishonest practices.
A leader can accept criticism.
A neighbour can help someone in difficulty.
A writer can distinguish history from imagination.
A reader can question propaganda.
These actions may never appear in history books.
But civilization is built from millions of such small decisions.
Chapter Twenty-Four: History and Imagination /
English
There is always a temptation in historical storytelling to present imagination as fact.
That temptation should be resisted.
Historical fiction becomes powerful when readers know what is documented and what is imagined.
If an invented oath is presented as historical fact, memory and evidence become confused.
But when we clearly say:
“This is an imagined episode inspired by Maharana Pratap's historical legacy,”
creativity remains honest.
The historical resistance is real.
The August oath is imagined.
The Independence Day connection is symbolic.
The philosophical message is contemporary.
Keeping these categories separate makes the story stronger.
Chapter Twenty-Five: The Deeper Meaning of Heroism /
English
A hero is often described as someone who defeats another person.
But there is another definition.
A hero is someone who defeats the worst possibility within himself.
A powerful person who refuses cruelty is heroic.
A victorious person who refuses revenge is heroic.
A frightened person who chooses courage is heroic.
A person who admits a mistake is heroic.
A citizen who protects another person's dignity is heroic.
This wider understanding allows historical heroes to inspire without turning them into supernatural figures.
Chapter Twenty-Six: A Message for Young India /
English
Young people often inherit historical names before they understand history.
They hear about battles.
Victories.
Defeats.
Heroes.
But history should eventually become a conversation.
Why did people resist?
Why did rulers negotiate?
Why did wars happen?
Who suffered?
Who benefited?
What can we learn?
These questions create mature citizenship.
The purpose of remembering Maharana Pratap should not be to teach young people that conflict is glorious.
It should teach them that principles matter, decisions have consequences, and courage requires discipline.
Chapter Twenty-Seven: The Flag and the Mountain /
English
Imagine the final image.
A mountain stands in the distance.
A flag flies in the foreground.
The mountain represents memory.
The flag represents modern freedom.
Between them stands an ordinary citizen.
Behind him are centuries of history.
Ahead lies the future.
He cannot change history.
But he can decide what history means to him.
He can remember courage without worshipping violence.
He can remember resistance without cultivating hatred.
He can celebrate patriotism without insulting others.
He can honour historical heroes while acknowledging complexity.
He can love freedom while accepting responsibility.
Perhaps that is the most beautiful way to remember the past.
Chapter Twenty-Eight: The Final Oath /
English
Let the imagined oath return one final time.
Not as a military command.
Not as a political slogan.
Not as a call for hatred.
But as a personal promise:
I will not glorify cruelty.
I will not call injustice justice.
I will not participate in harassment.
I will not humiliate the weak.
I will not surrender my conscience to fear.
I will not use freedom as an excuse for hatred.
I will respect human dignity.
I will seek justice through responsible means.
I will protect freedom by respecting the freedom of others.
I will remember the courage of those who resisted domination without becoming cruel myself.
I will carry the spirit of freedom into ordinary life.
And finally:
I will remember that the strongest nation is not merely the nation with the strongest army, but the nation whose people possess courage, justice, compassion and responsibility.
Conclusion /
English
August returns every year.
Calendars change.
Generations change.
Governments change.
Technology changes.
The world changes.
But the fundamental questions remain.
What is freedom?
What is justice?
What is courage?
What should a person do when power becomes oppressive?
When should we negotiate?
When should we resist?
How can resistance remain humane?
How can patriotism avoid becoming hatred?
How can historical memory inspire without becoming historical distortion?
These questions give the imagined episode its meaning.
Maharana Pratap belongs to the history of Mewar and sixteenth-century India. His resistance to Mughal expansion and his continuing struggle after Haldighati made him an enduring symbol of resistance.
But the August oath in this article is a literary invention.
The particular participation of the Suri community in this imagined gathering is also fictional.
The connection with Independence Day is symbolic.
Yet imagination can communicate another kind of truth.
It can remind us that freedom is not merely a date on a calendar.
It is a habit of conscience.
It is courage against cruelty.
It is wisdom to distinguish justice from revenge.
It is responsibility toward the vulnerable.
It is the discipline to remain humane while resisting wrongdoing.
Perhaps that is why an imagined August night can still speak to a modern Independence Day.
The warriors are gone.
The old kingdoms have changed.
The battlefields have become history.
The swords have become museum objects.
But the questions remain alive.
A child still asks what courage means.
A citizen still asks what justice means.
A society still asks what freedom requires.
And every generation must answer.
Perhaps the real oath of independence is not something spoken only once.
Perhaps it must be renewed every year.
Every August.
Not with hatred.
Not with revenge.
Not with the glorification of violence.
But with a simple promise:
May no person become so powerful that another person's dignity becomes meaningless.
May no person become so afraid that conscience becomes silent.
May no society become so proud that compassion becomes weakness.
And may freedom always remain connected with responsibility.
That is the imagined lesson of the August Oath.
That is the bridge between history and literature.
That is one meaningful way to remember Maharana Pratap.
And that is how an Independence Day story can become more than ornamentation.
It can become a reflection on what freedom asks from every human being.
