Najmul and Eli — Two Hearts, One Friendship
Part 3: The Day Everyone Turned Against Eli
English Version
Monday Morning
It was Monday morning.
Students were running around the school playground. Some were playing football, others were talking with their friends, and a few were revising their lessons before class began.
But that morning, Najmul felt that something was wrong.
As usual, he went to stand beneath the old tree. It was the same tree where he and Eli had first met. Under its branches, they shared their dreams, happiness, sadness, and hopes for the future.
But that day, Eli had not arrived yet.
A little later, Eli entered the school. His face looked sad, and his eyes showed worry. Usually, he would smile and walk towards Najmul as soon as he saw him. But today, he quietly headed towards his classroom.
Najmul called out to him.
“Eli! What happened? Why are you so quiet today?”
Eli stopped. There were so many thoughts in his mind, but he could not find the words to express them.
Najmul asked again, “Did someone say something to you?”
Eli slowly nodded.
“Yes, Najmul. Some boys told me that I should not remain friends with you.”
Najmul was surprised.
“Why? What have I done?”
Eli replied in a low voice, “They said that you are Muslim and I am Jewish. Our religions are different, so they think we should not be such close friends.”
Najmul remained silent for a moment.
His heart hurt. He had never imagined that someone would question their friendship simply because they followed different religions.
Still, he tried to remain calm.
“Eli, do you believe what they are saying?” Najmul asked.
Eli did not answer immediately. He looked down at the ground for a while.
“I don't know,” he said. “They keep repeating the same things. I don't understand what I should do.”
Najmul stepped closer to his friend.
“Eli, our religions may be different, but we are both human beings. We both have feelings, dreams, and families. We respect each other and try to stand beside each other during difficult times. So why should our friendship be wrong just because our religions are different?”
Eli looked at Najmul.
“But what if other people laugh at us?”
Najmul smiled gently.
“Sometimes people talk about others without understanding them. Not everyone will understand our friendship. But what matters more than what others say is how we treat each other.”
Eli remained quiet.
Najmul continued, “You are my friend, Eli. You don't have to give up your religion or become like me. And I don't have to become like you. We can be different and still remain good friends.”
Slowly, a smile returned to Eli's face.
“You really are my friend, Najmul.”
Najmul laughed and replied, “And you are my best friend!”
An Important Question in the Classroom
A little later, the class began.
That day, the teacher was discussing the students' school projects. Najmul and Eli's project was titled “Friendship Has No Borders.”
The teacher said, “Today, we will discuss how friendships can develop between people from different religions, languages, and cultures.”
One student raised his hand.
He asked, “Sir, can two people from different religions really become true friends?”
Suddenly, the classroom became silent.
The teacher said, “That is an excellent question. Najmul and Eli, would you like to share your thoughts?”
Najmul stood up.
“Sir, I believe that people do not need to follow the same religion to become true friends. What matters is mutual respect, trust, and compassion.”
Then Eli stood up.
“Our religions are different, but we respect each other. We study together, help each other, and try to solve misunderstandings by talking honestly. I believe it is wrong to judge someone before getting to know them.”
The teacher listened carefully.
Then he smiled and said, “That is a wonderful answer. You have understood something important: we should not judge a person only by their religion or identity. Their behaviour, honesty, kindness, and respect for others are important too.”
A few students clapped.
Even the boys who had questioned their friendship earlier remained silent.
Najmul and Eli looked at each other and smiled.
They realised that speaking the truth calmly could be the beginning of a change in people's hearts.
A Promise Beneath the Old Tree
After school, the two friends returned to the old tree and sat together.
The evening breeze gently moved the leaves. Everything around them was peaceful, but the events of the morning were still on their minds.
Eli said, “Today, I realised that sometimes we can begin to doubt even our friends after listening to other people. But it isn't right to believe everything without asking the person directly.”
Najmul nodded.
“I agree. If we want our friendship to remain strong, we must always speak honestly with each other.”
Eli held out his hand.
“Then let's make three promises.”
Najmul asked, “What are they?”
Eli said:
“First, if we hear rumours about each other, we will talk directly to each other before believing them.
“Second, if we disagree, we will listen carefully instead of becoming angry and walking away.
“Third, if we make mistakes, we will admit them and try to correct them.”
Najmul firmly held Eli's hand.
“I promise.”
Eli smiled. “And I promise too.”
For a while, they sat quietly.
Then Najmul said, “Eli, remember one thing. True friendship doesn't mean that we will never face problems. It means that when problems arise, we will try to understand each other.”
Eli smiled.
“And we must never forget that our friendship began with a football beneath this old tree.”
Both boys burst into laughter.
That day, they returned home with a new understanding. They knew that more difficult situations might arise in the future. Some people might never understand their friendship. But if they held on to honesty, respect, and trust, they would find the courage to face every challenge.
Najmul and Eli had learned an important lesson:
True friendship does not demand that religious differences disappear. Instead, it grows stronger when people respect those differences and treat one another with kindness.
Beneath the old tree, their friendship continued to grow—two hearts from different backgrounds, each trying to understand the other.
But they did not yet know that a letter would soon bring a change into their lives and take their friendship in an unexpected direction.

دوست ❤️ Part 3 English–Urdu is complete. Part 4 — The Letter That Changed Everything / وہ خط جس نے سب کچھ بدل دیا۔
