The silence inside the inn grew heavier with every passing moment.
Then I heard it.
A faint sound beneath the wooden floor.
It was neither a footstep nor the cry of an animal.
It resembled the slow turning of ancient pages.
Curiosity overcame fear.
Holding one of the old candles, I searched every corner of the room until I found a narrow wooden door hidden beneath a worn carpet.
The door was unlocked.
As it opened, a cold breath of air rose from the darkness below.
A narrow stone staircase disappeared into the earth.
Each step echoed through the silence as though the underground chamber had been waiting for visitors for centuries.
At the bottom stood a small room carved from ancient stone.
In its center rested a heavy wooden table.
Upon it lay a massive book covered with dust.
Its leather binding had almost turned to stone with age.
When I gently opened it, I found page after page filled with names.
Thousands of names.
Some written in elegant handwriting.
Others barely visible.
Beside every name appeared only two dates.
The day of arrival.
The day of departure.
Nothing more.
No titles.
No wealth.
No achievements.
No failures.
Only a beginning.
And an end.
As I slowly turned another page, my hands froze.
The final page contained only a single blank line.
Waiting.
For a name that had not yet been written.

ازداد الصمت داخل النزل ثِقَلًا مع مرور كل لحظة.
ثم سمعته.
صوتًا خافتًا قادمًا من تحت الأرضية الخشبية.
لم يكن صوت خطوات، ولا صوت حيوان.
بل بدا وكأنه صوت صفحاتٍ قديمة تُقلب ببطء.
غلب الفضول الخوف.
حملتُ إحدى الشموع القديمة، وبدأت أفتش أرجاء المكان حتى وجدت بابًا خشبيًا صغيرًا مخفيًا تحت سجادةٍ بالية.
كان الباب غير مقفل.
وحين فتحته، اندفعت من الأعماق نسمةٌ باردة.
كان هناك سلمٌ حجري ضيق ينزل إلى باطن الأرض.
وكان صدى خطواتي يتردد في الظلام، كأن هذا المكان ينتظر زائرًا منذ قرون.
وفي الأسفل وجدت غرفةً صغيرة منحوتة في الحجر.
وفي وسطها كانت طاولةٌ خشبية ثقيلة.
وفوقها كتابٌ ضخم غطاه الغبار.
كان جلده قد تقادم حتى بدا كأنه حجر.
فتحتُ الكتاب بحذر.
فوجدت صفحةً بعد صفحة مليئةً بالأسماء.
آلاف الأسماء.
بعضها كُتب بخطٍ جميل.
وبعضها كاد يختفي مع الزمن.
وبجانب كل اسم تاريخان فقط.
تاريخ الوصول.
وتاريخ الرحيل.
ولا شيء غير ذلك.
لا ألقاب.
لا ثروة.
لا إنجازات.
لا إخفاقات.
فقط...
بداية.
ونهاية.
وعندما قلبت الصفحة الأخيرة، تجمدت يداي.
فقد كان فيها سطرٌ واحدٌ فارغ.
ينتظر...
اسمًا لم يُكتب بعد.

The ancient register reminds us that every human life, regardless of status or achievement, is measured by more than the space between two dates. What truly gives meaning to that space is how we live, how we love, and how we touch the lives of others.

يُذكِّرنا السجل القديم بأن حياة كل إنسان، مهما كانت مكانته أو إنجازاته، لا تُختزل في المسافة بين تاريخي الميلاد والوفاة. إن ما يمنح تلك المسافة معناها الحقيقي هو طريقة عيشنا، ومحبتنا، والأثر الذي نتركه في حياة الآخرين.
I can continue with Part 4, where the narrator encounters the mysterious innkeeper for the first time and the boundary between the living and the unseen world becomes even more uncertain.
