Introduction: Why Does Mexico Awaken Our Curiosity?
Curiosity begins with a simple question: What is this country really like?
Mexico is far more than a name on a map. It is a country where ancient civilizations, Indigenous traditions, Spanish colonial heritage, modern industries, global commerce, religion, art, music and contemporary life exist side by side.
When we hear the word Mexico, we may imagine pyramids, mariachi music, tacos, beautiful beaches, deserts, football, the Day of the Dead, or the enormous metropolis of Mexico City.
Yet none of these images alone can explain Mexico.
Mexico is simultaneously ancient and modern, Indigenous and global, agricultural and industrial, mountainous and coastal. It has a deep Catholic heritage while becoming increasingly religiously diverse. It is one of the world's important manufacturing economies while remaining deeply connected to agriculture, natural resources and tourism.
Its history extends from the great civilizations of Mesoamerica through Spanish conquest, colonial rule, independence, revolution, modernization and globalization.
That extraordinary combination makes Mexico one of the world's most fascinating countries.
1. Mexico at a Glance
Mexico, officially the United Mexican States, occupies a large portion of southern North America.
It borders the United States to the north, Guatemala and Belize to the southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, and the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea to the east.
This geographical position gives Mexico extraordinary strategic importance.
It is:
a North American country;
a Latin American nation;
a major Spanish-speaking society;
a Pacific and Atlantic country;
a major manufacturing center;
an important agricultural producer;
a tourism power;
a resource-rich country;
and an important bridge between North America and Latin America.
Its capital, Mexico City, is one of the world's largest metropolitan areas and an important political, economic, cultural and educational center.
Mexico consists of 31 states and Mexico City as a federal entity.
2. The Geography of Mexico
Mexico possesses extraordinary geographical diversity.
Northern Mexico contains extensive deserts and semi-arid regions. Central Mexico contains high plateaus, valleys and mountain systems. The south and southeast contain tropical forests, fertile areas and the Yucatán Peninsula.
Major mountain systems include the Sierra Madre Occidental, Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre del Sur.
Mexico is also located in a geologically active region. Volcanoes such as Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl are famous parts of the country's landscape.
Geography has influenced Mexican history in countless ways.
Mountains affected transportation.
Rivers and fertile land encouraged agriculture.
Coasts encouraged fishing and trade.
Deserts influenced settlement.
Highlands became centers of ancient civilizations.
Geography therefore is not simply scenery.
Geography helped create Mexican history.
3. Northern Mexico and the Deserts
Northern Mexico contains some of North America's great desert environments.
The Chihuahuan Desert is one of the largest desert regions in North America.
The Sonoran Desert extends across northwestern Mexico and into the United States.
These areas may appear extremely harsh, but they contain complex ecosystems.
Cacti, desert plants, reptiles, birds and mammals have developed remarkable adaptations to heat and limited water.
The deserts also contain mineral resources and have become important areas for mining, agriculture under irrigation, renewable energy and border trade.
4. The Yucatán Peninsula
The Yucatán Peninsula is one of Mexico's most fascinating geographical and cultural regions.
Its limestone geology created underground water systems and cenotes, natural sinkholes containing freshwater.
The peninsula also contains tropical forests and spectacular Caribbean coastlines.
More importantly, it is closely connected with the history of Maya civilization.
Places such as Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Tulum and Calakmul demonstrate the sophistication of ancient Maya society.
Modern destinations such as Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Mérida have made the region an international tourism center.
5. Ancient Civilizations of Mexico
Long before European arrival, sophisticated civilizations flourished in Mexico.
Among them were:
the Olmec;
Maya;
Teotihuacan civilization;
Zapotec;
Mixtec;
Toltec;
Mexica or Aztec.
These civilizations developed sophisticated systems of agriculture, architecture, mathematics, astronomy, writing, government, trade and religion.
They were not one single civilization.
They belonged to different periods and regions.
The history of ancient Mexico is therefore a history of many civilizations interacting, competing, trading and influencing one another.
6. The Olmec Civilization
The Olmec civilization developed mainly along Mexico's Gulf Coast.
It is often considered one of the earliest major civilizations of Mesoamerica.
The enormous stone heads associated with Olmec culture have become internationally famous.
The Olmec demonstrate that complex civilization existed in Mexico long before the rise of the Mexica Empire.
Their cultural influence also appears to have reached other parts of Mesoamerica.
7. Teotihuacan
Teotihuacan was one of the greatest cities of ancient Mesoamerica.
Its enormous pyramids, monumental avenues and sophisticated urban organization demonstrate the scale of the civilization that developed there.
The Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon remain among Mexico's most famous archaeological monuments.
The city influenced societies across a large region.
Even today, Teotihuacan reminds visitors that the history of Mexico's urban civilization began thousands of years before the modern era.
8. Maya Civilization
The Maya civilization was one of the world's great ancient civilizations.
Maya societies developed sophisticated:
calendars;
writing systems;
mathematical knowledge;
astronomical observations;
architecture;
political systems.
In Mexico, important Maya sites include Chichén Itzá, Palenque, Uxmal and Calakmul.
But the Maya are not simply an ancient civilization.
Maya peoples continue to live in Mexico today.
Their languages, food, clothing, crafts, traditions and cultural identities remain part of modern Mexico.
9. The Mexica or Aztec Civilization
The Mexica, commonly known as the Aztecs, established Tenochtitlan on an island in Lake Texcoco.
The city eventually became the political and economic center of a powerful empire.
When the Spanish arrived, Tenochtitlan was one of the largest cities in the Americas.
Its temples, markets, canals, roads and agricultural systems demonstrated sophisticated urban planning.
The Mexica controlled a large region through warfare, tribute, alliances and political power.
However, they also had many enemies.
Those political divisions later became important during the Spanish conquest.
10. The Spanish Conquest
Hernán Cortés arrived in Mexico in 1519.
The Spanish conquest was not simply a battle between a small Spanish army and the Aztec Empire.
Cortés formed alliances with Indigenous peoples who opposed Mexica power.
European diseases, especially smallpox, also caused catastrophic population losses.
In 1521, Tenochtitlan fell.
The Spanish then established colonial rule.
Political institutions changed.
Christianity expanded.
Spanish became increasingly dominant.
European crops and animals arrived.
New systems of land ownership and labor developed.
Yet Indigenous culture did not disappear.
Instead, Indigenous, European and African influences gradually interacted and created new forms of Mexican society.
11. New Spain
For approximately three centuries, much of present-day Mexico was part of the Spanish colony known as New Spain.
Mexico City became the center of colonial administration.
Mining, especially silver mining, became extremely important.
Agriculture, ranching, trade, religious institutions and urban centers expanded.
Mexican silver became part of a global trading system connecting the Americas, Europe and Asia.
However, colonial society was deeply unequal.
Indigenous communities experienced exploitation and loss of land and political autonomy.
African people were also brought to the colony through slavery.
The colonial period therefore created both cultural legacies and painful historical memories.
12. Religion During the Colonial Period
Catholic Christianity became deeply established during colonial rule.
Missionaries created churches, monasteries, schools and other institutions.
However, Indigenous traditions did not simply disappear.
Instead, a complex process of religious and cultural blending developed.
Catholic saints and celebrations sometimes became connected with older Indigenous traditions.
The Virgin of Guadalupe eventually became one of the most powerful religious and cultural symbols of Mexico.
This history explains why Mexican religious culture contains both European and Indigenous elements.
13. Mexican Independence
Mexico's independence movement began in 1810.
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla became one of the most important figures associated with its beginning.
The struggle continued for many years.
Mexico finally achieved independence in 1821.
But independence did not immediately create political stability.
The new nation faced:
political conflict;
economic difficulties;
regional divisions;
military instability;
disputes over federalism and centralization;
foreign intervention.
The nineteenth century became one of the most turbulent periods in Mexican history.
14. Mexico and the United States
The relationship between Mexico and the United States has been one of the most important international relationships in Mexican history.
During the nineteenth century, conflict between the two countries led to war.
The resulting treaties and territorial changes dramatically altered the map of North America.
Today, however, the relationship is not simply about historical conflict.
The two countries are deeply connected through:
trade;
manufacturing;
migration;
tourism;
families;
agriculture;
energy;
culture.
The United States is Mexico's most important economic partner.
15. The Mexican Revolution
The Mexican Revolution began in 1910.
Porfirio Díaz had governed Mexico for many years.
His government promoted modernization and economic development, but political repression and inequality were major problems.
Francisco Madero challenged Díaz.
The revolutionary period later involved figures such as:
Emiliano Zapata;
Pancho Villa;
Venustiano Carranza;
Álvaro Obregón.
Zapata became especially famous for his demand for land reform and peasant rights.
The Revolution transformed Mexican politics, land policy, labor rights and national identity.
The Constitution of 1917 became an important foundation for social and economic rights.
16. Mexico's Modern Economy
Mexico has one of the world's largest economies.
Its economy is highly diversified.
Major sectors include:
manufacturing;
automobiles;
electronics;
aerospace;
petroleum;
mining;
agriculture;
tourism;
finance;
telecommunications;
retail;
construction;
food processing;
professional services.
One of Mexico's greatest economic advantages is its location next to the United States.
This has helped Mexico become a major manufacturing and export platform.
17. Manufacturing
Mexico is particularly important in automobile manufacturing.
Many international companies produce vehicles and components in Mexico.
Electronics, aerospace equipment and industrial machinery are also important.
Mexico's proximity to the United States allows products manufactured there to reach the American market quickly.
This geographical advantage has made Mexico an important part of North American supply chains.
18. Nearshoring
The idea of nearshoring has become increasingly important.
Companies sometimes move production closer to their largest consumer markets.
Mexico is well positioned for this trend because of:
its location;
industrial experience;
skilled and semi-skilled labor;
trade agreements;
transportation networks;
access to the United States;
large domestic market.
The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is particularly important for North American trade.
However, Mexico must continue improving electricity supply, water infrastructure, transportation, security and workforce skills.
19. Agriculture
Despite its modern industrial economy, Mexico remains an important agricultural country.
Major agricultural products include:
maize;
wheat;
beans;
tomatoes;
avocados;
peppers;
fruits;
vegetables;
coffee;
sugar;
livestock products.
Maize has extraordinary cultural importance.
It is not simply an agricultural commodity.
It has been connected to Mexican civilization for thousands of years.
The tortilla, one of Mexico's most famous foods, reflects this ancient relationship between agriculture and culture.
20. Tourism
Tourism is one of Mexico's most important economic sectors.
The country offers:
beaches;
archaeological sites;
colonial cities;
museums;
cuisine;
festivals;
forests;
mountains;
deserts;
cultural traditions.
Major destinations include:
Mexico City;
Cancún;
Tulum;
Oaxaca;
Mérida;
Puerto Vallarta;
Los Cabos;
Guadalajara;
San Miguel de Allende.
Tourism creates employment and foreign exchange.
But excessive tourism can also create pressure on water supplies, ecosystems, housing and local communities.
21. Poverty and Inequality
Mexico has achieved important economic and social progress, but inequality remains significant.
Some areas have sophisticated industries, high incomes and modern infrastructure.
Other regions, particularly some rural and Indigenous communities, face higher poverty and weaker access to services.
According to World Bank reporting, Mexico's multidimensional poverty rate declined from 43.2% in 2016 to 36.3% in 2022.
That is important progress.
Nevertheless, economic development needs to become more inclusive.
The central question is not simply:
“How fast is the economy growing?”
It is also:
“Who is benefiting from that growth?”
22. Education in Mexico
Education is one of the most important foundations of Mexico's future.
The system includes:
early childhood education;
primary education;
secondary education;
upper secondary education;
vocational education;
universities;
postgraduate education.
Access to education has expanded considerably.
However, differences remain between urban and rural areas, rich and poor communities, and different regions.
According to OECD data, the share of 25–34-year-olds without upper-secondary education fell from 49% in 2019 to 41% in 2024.
This is progress, but it also demonstrates the scale of the remaining challenge.
23. Higher Education
Mexico has a large and diverse higher-education system.
The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is one of the country's most important universities and research institutions.
The Instituto Politécnico Nacional has particular importance in science and engineering.
Private universities also contribute significantly to higher education.
However, postgraduate education and research capacity still have room for expansion.
A stronger knowledge economy would require greater investment in:
research;
laboratories;
universities;
innovation;
technology;
scientific talent.
24. Science and Technology
Mexico has considerable potential in science and innovation.
Future opportunities include:
artificial intelligence;
biotechnology;
aerospace;
medicine;
renewable energy;
agricultural technology;
software;
telecommunications;
advanced manufacturing.
The challenge is to build stronger connections between universities, government, industry and research institutions.
If Mexico succeeds, it could become not only a manufacturing powerhouse but also an innovation center.
25. Languages of Mexico
Spanish is the dominant language of Mexico.
But Mexico is also home to many Indigenous languages.
These include Nahuatl, Maya languages, Mixtec, Zapotec, Tzotzil, Tzeltal and many others.
Language carries:
history;
memory;
identity;
traditional knowledge;
literature;
worldview.
Protecting Indigenous languages is therefore an important cultural responsibility.
26. Indigenous Peoples
Indigenous peoples are central to Mexican identity.
Their ancestors developed important agricultural, architectural, medical, artistic and scientific knowledge.
Yet Indigenous communities have historically faced:
discrimination;
poverty;
land disputes;
political marginalization;
unequal access to education and healthcare.
Modern Mexico increasingly recognizes Indigenous rights, but many challenges remain.
Indigenous Mexico is not merely an archaeological memory.
It is alive today.
27. Religion in Mexico
Mexico has historically been a predominantly Catholic country.
According to the 2020 census, approximately 78% of the population identified as Catholic.
However, Mexico is becoming more religiously diverse.
There are significant Protestant and evangelical communities.
There are also Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Indigenous-traditional and other religious communities.
A growing number of people identify as having no religion.
The 2020 census recorded approximately 10.2 million people in categories associated with having no religion or atheism.
28. Catholicism and the Virgin of Guadalupe
Catholicism has deeply influenced Mexican culture.
Religious festivals, churches, pilgrimages, saints' celebrations and family ceremonies remain important.
The Virgin of Guadalupe has a particularly powerful role.
For many Mexicans, she represents both religious faith and national-cultural identity.
However, Mexican religious identity is not uniform.
Some people are deeply practicing Catholics.
Others identify culturally as Catholic but are less religiously active.
Others belong to different religions or have no religious affiliation.
29. Mexico as a Secular State
Modern Mexico is a secular state.
The state does not officially represent one religion.
The historical conflicts between church and government contributed to the development of strong secular traditions.
Today, religious freedom allows Catholics, Protestants, evangelicals, Jews, Muslims, members of Indigenous traditions and nonreligious people to live within the same national framework.
This demonstrates that national identity does not have to depend upon one religious identity.
30. Mexican Cuisine
Mexican cuisine is one of the world's most influential food traditions.
Famous dishes and ingredients include:
tacos;
tortillas;
tamales;
mole;
enchiladas;
pozole;
guacamole;
beans;
chilies;
seafood;
maize-based dishes.
But Mexican cuisine is highly regional.
Northern Mexico has different culinary traditions from Oaxaca.
Yucatán has its own distinctive flavors.
Coastal regions emphasize seafood.
Food is therefore not simply something people eat.
Food is history that can be tasted.
31. The Day of the Dead
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is one of Mexico's best-known traditions.
Families remember deceased relatives by creating ofrendas, or altars.
They may place:
photographs;
candles;
flowers;
food;
personal belongings.
The tradition reflects both Indigenous and Catholic influences.
Its deeper message is remembrance.
Death does not necessarily mean complete disappearance.
A loved one continues to exist through memory, family stories and cultural traditions.
32. Mexican Music
Mariachi is perhaps Mexico's most internationally recognized musical tradition.
Other important styles include:
ranchera;
norteño;
banda;
son;
regional folk music;
pop;
rock;
hip-hop.
Mexican music often speaks about love, family, migration, patriotism, faith, heartbreak and social struggle.
Music therefore becomes another form of historical memory.
33. Mexican Literature
Mexico has produced internationally influential writers.
Octavio Paz won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Juan Rulfo's Pedro Páramo became one of the influential works of Latin American literature.
Mexican literature frequently explores:
identity;
death;
memory;
revolution;
colonialism;
Indigenous life;
political power;
modernity.
Literature helps Mexico understand itself.
34. Mexican Art
Mexico has produced a remarkable artistic tradition.
The twentieth-century mural movement was particularly influential.
Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros created monumental murals depicting workers, Indigenous peoples, history, revolution and social struggles.
Frida Kahlo became one of the world's most famous Mexican artists.
Her paintings explored identity, physical suffering, relationships, culture and personal experience.
35. Mexico's Major Cities
Mexico City
Mexico City is the political, cultural and educational heart of the country.
Guadalajara
Guadalajara is famous for mariachi, tequila, culture, business and technology.
Monterrey
Monterrey is one of Mexico's major industrial and business centers.
Mérida
Mérida is strongly connected to Yucatán and Maya heritage.
Oaxaca
Oaxaca is famous for Indigenous culture, food, crafts, festivals and colonial architecture.
Together these cities demonstrate the enormous diversity of Mexican society.
36. Migration
Migration has profoundly influenced Mexican history.
Millions of Mexicans have migrated to the United States for employment, family reunification, education and other reasons.
Mexican communities have become an important part of American society.
At the same time, Mexico is also a transit and destination country for migrants from other parts of Latin America and beyond.
Migration therefore connects economics, diplomacy, humanitarian policy and family life.
37. The Mexico-US Border
The Mexico-US border is one of the world's most important international boundaries.
It is not simply a security line.
It is also a region of:
trade;
families;
culture;
employment;
migration;
tourism;
transportation.
Millions of people have family connections across the border.
Huge quantities of goods cross the border every day.
The border is therefore both a political boundary and a zone of intense human interaction.
38. Security and Organized Crime
Organized crime and drug trafficking have created serious security problems in parts of Mexico.
These problems can affect:
communities;
businesses;
journalists;
police;
local governments;
families.
But Mexico should never be reduced to the issue of crime.
It is a vast country where the overwhelming majority of people are engaged in ordinary life: studying, working, raising families, farming, conducting business, creating art and contributing to society.
Crime is a major challenge, but it is only one part of the Mexican story.
39. Environmental Challenges
Mexico is one of the world's biologically diverse countries.
It contains:
deserts;
forests;
mountains;
wetlands;
coral reefs;
tropical ecosystems;
extensive coastlines.
However, Mexico faces:
deforestation;
water shortages;
pollution;
biodiversity loss;
urban expansion;
climate change;
coastal degradation.
The country has significant potential for solar and wind energy.
Its future challenge is to combine economic growth with ecological responsibility.
40. Water and Climate Change
Water may become one of Mexico's most important strategic issues.
Some regions receive abundant rainfall while others experience severe drought.
Cities require enormous quantities of water.
Agriculture also consumes large amounts.
Climate change may intensify:
drought;
heat;
floods;
hurricanes;
agricultural stress;
coastal vulnerability.
Mexico therefore needs better water management, efficient irrigation, recycling, conservation and sustainable urban planning.
41. Women in Mexican Society
Mexican women have made important contributions to:
politics;
education;
science;
art;
business;
agriculture;
family life.
Women's educational participation has increased significantly.
Yet challenges remain concerning employment, wages, unpaid care work, political representation, violence and economic opportunity.
Gender equality will remain an important element of Mexico's future development.
42. Young People
Mexico's young population represents a major opportunity.
Young people can become a powerful economic force if they receive:
quality education;
healthcare;
technical skills;
employment;
digital access;
entrepreneurship opportunities.
Investment in young people is therefore an investment in Mexico's long-term future.
43. Mexico and Global Culture
Mexico's cultural influence extends far beyond its borders.
Mexican food is popular throughout the world.
Mexican music has international audiences.
Mexican cinema and literature have influenced global culture.
Mexican artists are displayed in museums across the world.
Mexican festivals and traditions have inspired people in many other countries.
Mexico is therefore not simply a consumer of global culture.
It is one of the world's important producers of culture.
44. Mexico and Latin America
Mexico occupies a special position in Latin America.
Geographically, it is part of North America.
Culturally and historically, however, it has deep connections with Latin America.
Mexico maintains strong relationships with Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
Its population, economy and cultural influence make it one of the region's major powers.
45. Mexico in the Global Economy
Mexico is deeply integrated into global trade.
It maintains economic relationships with:
the United States;
Canada;
Latin America;
Europe;
Asia;
Pacific economies.
Modern manufacturing depends on international supply chains.
A vehicle manufactured in Mexico may contain components from several countries before being exported to another market.
This is the reality of globalization.
Mexico is not isolated from the world.
It is deeply connected to it.
46. Mexico's Economic Challenges
Mexico's future growth will depend on overcoming several challenges.
Productivity
Productivity growth needs to accelerate.
Informal Employment
A large informal economy limits tax collection and worker protections.
Inequality
Income and opportunity remain unevenly distributed.
Infrastructure
Transport, electricity, water and digital infrastructure require continued investment.
Security
Organized crime affects some regions and economic activity.
Skills
Modern manufacturing requires increasingly sophisticated technical skills.
Institutional Stability
Businesses benefit from predictable rules and effective institutions.
47. Mexico's Greatest Strength
Perhaps Mexico's greatest strength is its diversity.
Geographical diversity.
Cultural diversity.
Economic diversity.
Religious diversity.
Historical diversity.
Linguistic diversity.
Regional diversity.
This diversity can sometimes make governance more complicated because different regions have different needs.
But diversity can also generate creativity.
A society containing many traditions can produce many ideas.
48. Mexico's Greatest Challenge
One of Mexico's greatest challenges is transforming its enormous potential into broadly shared prosperity.
Mexico possesses:
a huge domestic market;
proximity to the United States;
manufacturing capacity;
natural resources;
tourism;
agriculture;
universities;
a large workforce;
global cultural influence.
But inequality, security problems, infrastructure gaps, educational differences and regional disparities can limit its potential.
The question is therefore not whether Mexico has resources.
The deeper question is:
How can Mexico transform those resources into opportunity for the largest possible number of people?
49. What Can the World Learn from Mexico?
Mexico offers several important lessons.
Civilizations can survive transformation.
Ancient traditions can continue within modern societies.
Geography matters.
Mountains, deserts, oceans and borders influence economic development.
Economic integration can create opportunity.
Mexico's North American relationships transformed its manufacturing sector.
Growth does not automatically eliminate inequality.
Economic development must be combined with social inclusion.
Education is a long-term investment.
Culture can become economic strength.
Food, music, art, history and tourism can simultaneously create identity and employment.
Religious diversity can coexist with cultural continuity.
50. Final Reflection
Mexico is not simply a country on a map.
It is a civilization with many layers.
It is the land of ancient pyramids and modern skyscrapers.
It is the land of deserts and tropical forests.
It is agricultural and industrial.
It possesses a deep Catholic heritage while becoming increasingly religiously diverse.
It is Spanish-speaking while preserving many Indigenous languages.
It is closely connected to the United States while maintaining a distinctive cultural identity.
Its history contains conquest, colonialism, independence, revolution, modernization and globalization.
Its challenges are serious.
Its possibilities are enormous.
Its culture is extraordinary.
Its future remains open.
Perhaps the best way to understand Mexico is not to ask whether it is an ancient country or a modern country.
Mexico is both.
The pyramids of Teotihuacan belong to Mexico.
Maya heritage belongs to Mexico.
Colonial cathedrals belong to Mexico.
The Revolution belongs to Mexico.
Modern universities belong to Mexico.
Advanced factories producing goods for global markets belong to Mexico.
Its food, music, families, festivals, literature, art, faith, Indigenous languages and technological ambitions all belong to one continuing national story.
Mexico teaches us that a nation is more than a political boundary.
A nation is memory.
A nation is geography.
A nation is language.
A nation is food.
A nation is faith and doubt.
A nation is struggle.
A nation is creativity.
A nation is the accumulated experience of generations.
The curious mind begins with one question:
“What is Mexico?”
But after exploring its geography, history, economy, education, religion and culture, another question emerges:
“What can Mexico become?”
Perhaps there is no final answer.
And perhaps that uncertainty is exactly what makes Mexico so fascinating.

Nearshoring
Ofrendas.
