Najmul and Eli — Two Hearts, One Friendship | Part 2
NAJMUL AND ELI
Two Hearts, One Friendship
Part 2 — The First Secret
The next morning, Najmul arrived at school before the first bell.
As usual, he walked toward the old tree in the playground.
But this time, someone was already sitting there.
It was Eli.
He was holding two cups of tea.
When he saw Najmul approaching, he smiled and raised one of the cups.
"I brought one for you."
Najmul sat beside him, looking surprised.
"For me?"
"Of course."
"You remembered?"
Eli laughed.
"Of course I remembered. Yesterday, you told me that you liked drinking tea before school."
Najmul accepted the cup with a warm smile.
"Thank you, my friend."
Eli looked at him for a moment.
"My friend?"
Najmul nodded.
"Yes. My friend."
Eli smiled quietly.
Perhaps those two words meant more to him than Najmul realized.
Sometimes, a person does not need a long speech to feel accepted. Sometimes, two simple words can make someone feel that they belong.
For Eli, that morning became one of those moments.
A Friendship Growing Stronger
During the lunch break, the two boys sat together beneath the old tree and worked on their school project.
Najmul was writing about the meaning of friendship.
Eli was searching for examples of people from different communities helping one another.
They discussed kindness, trust, respect, and the importance of understanding people whose lives might be different from their own.
"Do you think people can be best friends even if their religions are different?" Eli suddenly asked.
Najmul looked up from his notebook.
"Of course they can."
"But what if their families don't understand?"
Najmul paused before answering.
"Then they should try to explain their friendship with patience and respect. We don't have to agree on everything to care about each other."
Eli thought about those words.
"I like that idea," he said.
Najmul smiled.
"Then write it in our project."
Eli opened his notebook and wrote:
True friendship does not require two people to be identical. It requires them to respect each other's differences.
Najmul read the sentence and nodded approvingly.
"That's a good line."
Eli grinned.
"Maybe we should become writers."
"Let's finish the school project first," Najmul replied, laughing.
For a while, they forgot about everything else and concentrated on their work.
But then Eli suddenly stopped writing.
His smile disappeared.
Najmul noticed immediately.
"What happened?"
"Nothing," Eli answered.
Najmul closed his notebook.
"You don't look like someone who has nothing on his mind."
Eli tried to smile, but it didn't last.
"Can I tell you something?"
"Of course."
"But you have to promise not to tell anyone."
Najmul looked directly into his eyes.
"If you trust me enough to tell me, I'll respect your privacy. You can talk to me."
Eli took a deep breath.
"My family might move to another city."
Najmul became silent.
For a few seconds, he could not find the right words.
"Move away?" he finally asked.
Eli nodded.
"Maybe in a few months."
"Why?"
"My father's work. He might get transferred."
Najmul looked down at his hands.
He had known Eli for only a short time, yet the thought of losing his new friend made him feel unexpectedly sad.
"Do you want to move?" he asked.
Eli shook his head.
"Not really. I like my school. I like my friends. And now..."
He stopped speaking.
"And now what?" Najmul asked gently.
Eli looked at him.
"Now I've found a friend I don't want to lose."
Najmul felt a tightness in his chest.
He had never expected their friendship to become so important so quickly.
Finally, he said, "Maybe your father won't have to move."
"Maybe," Eli replied.
"But even if your family moves, it doesn't mean our friendship has to end."
Eli looked surprised.
"How could we stay best friends if we lived in different cities?"
"We could write letters, call each other, and visit whenever possible. It might be difficult, but we could try."
Eli was quiet for a moment.
Then he smiled.
"You really think our friendship can survive that?"
Najmul answered without hesitation.
"If we both care enough to keep it alive, why not?"
Eli looked away, trying to hide the emotion in his eyes.
"Thank you, Najmul."
"For what?"
"For listening without making me feel foolish for being worried."
Najmul placed a reassuring hand on his friend's shoulder.
"You don't have to pretend to be happy when you're worried. Friends should be able to tell each other the truth."
Eli nodded slowly.
That day, their friendship became a little deeper.
They had shared a secret, but more importantly, they had learned that trust meant giving another person the freedom to speak honestly without fear of being judged.
The Title of Their Project
After school, the two boys returned to the old tree.
Najmul opened their project notebook.
"We still need a title."
Eli leaned back against the tree and thought for a moment.
"What about 'Friendship Has No Borders'?"
Najmul looked at him and smiled.
"That's perfect."
He carefully wrote the title at the top of a fresh page:
FRIENDSHIP HAS NO BORDERS
Eli read the words aloud.
"Friendship Has No Borders."
He repeated them quietly, as though he wanted to remember them forever.
"One day," he said, "I want people to understand what that really means."
Najmul closed the notebook.
"They will."
Eli raised an eyebrow.
"How do you know?"
"Because we'll show them through our actions."
Eli laughed.
"You sound very confident."
"Someone has to be confident," Najmul replied. "You seem to be worrying enough for both of us."
Eli burst out laughing.
"That's unfair!"
"Is it untrue?"
Eli shook his head, still smiling.
"No, perhaps not."
Their laughter drifted across the playground.
Nearby, some students were playing football, while others were walking home together.
The ordinary school day was coming to an end.
Yet for Najmul and Eli, something meaningful had happened.
They had discovered that friendship was not simply about spending time together or sharing jokes.
It was also about listening, understanding, and remaining kind when another person was afraid.
A Promise Beneath the Old Tree
As the afternoon sun began to set, Eli grew thoughtful again.
"Najmul, can I ask you something?"
"Anything."
"Suppose people tell us that we shouldn't be friends because you're Muslim and I'm Jewish. What would you do?"
Najmul considered the question carefully.
"I would ask them why they believe our religions prevent us from treating each other with kindness."
"And if they refused to listen?"
"I would still treat you with respect. I wouldn't let someone else's prejudice decide how I behave."
Eli watched him closely.
"But what if people make fun of us?"
"That might hurt," Najmul admitted. "We're human. But we don't have to become cruel just because someone else is cruel."
Eli lowered his eyes.
"Sometimes, I wish people would stop judging each other."
"So do I," Najmul said. "But perhaps we can begin by not judging each other."
For a moment, neither boy spoke.
Then Eli extended his hand.
"Promise me something."
"What?"
"If we ever hear rumours about each other, let's talk before believing them."
Najmul immediately shook his hand.
"I promise."
"And if we disagree about something?"
"We'll listen to each other."
"And if one of us makes a mistake?"
"We'll be honest about it and try to make things right."
Eli smiled.
"That sounds like a real friendship."
Najmul grinned.
"I think we're getting better at this."
They sat quietly beneath the old tree.
The sky turned golden, and a gentle breeze moved through the branches above them.
Neither boy knew what the future held.
They did not know whether Eli's family would move away. They did not know what challenges might test their friendship or how much they would change as they grew older.
But they had made an important discovery.
A true friendship is not measured by how long two people have known each other. It is measured by the trust, respect, honesty, and kindness they build together.
As they gathered their books, Eli looked at Najmul.
"Best friends?"
Najmul smiled.
"Best friends."
They walked toward the school gate side by side.
Behind them, the old tree stood quietly in the evening light.
And beneath its branches, two young boys carried a promise that would soon be tested in ways neither of them could imagine.
Their story was only beginning.
To be continued in Part 3 — The Day Everyone Turned Against Eli.
