Najmul and Eli — Two Hearts, One Friendship
Part 17: The Day Their Kindness Came Back to Them
English Version
1. A Small Act of Help, a New Beginning
On Monday morning, Najmul arrived at school. Before entering his classroom, he noticed Riya helping a younger student who had recently joined the school. The boy looked confused because he could not find his classroom.
Riya smiled and asked, “What's your classroom number? Come on, I'll help you find it.”
The boy looked relieved and followed her.
Najmul stood nearby for a moment. He remembered how nervous and lonely Riya had felt when she first arrived at school. On that day, Najmul had invited her to join his science group.
Now Riya was showing the same kindness to someone else.
When she returned, Najmul said, “I saw you helping the new student. That was a really kind thing to do.”
Riya smiled. “When I was new, you invited me to join your group. I thought I might have to stay alone, but your invitation made me feel that I belonged here. Today, when I saw that boy struggling, I thought I could help him too.”
Najmul replied, “Perhaps that's what kindness means. We don't always help the same person who once helped us. Sometimes, we help someone else because we remember how another person's kindness made us feel.”
Riya nodded.
That day, Najmul understood that a small good deed does not simply end when the action is over. It can become a new beginning in someone else's behaviour.
2. A Thought Shared with Eli
After school, Najmul sent Eli a message.
He wrote:
“Today I saw Riya helping a new student. When she was new, I invited her to join my science group. Today, she did something similar for someone else. It made me really happy.”
A little later, Eli replied:
“That's beautiful, Najmul. Kindness can travel from one person to another. But we shouldn't turn it into a competition. We don't need to count how many people we help or expect everyone to behave exactly like us. What matters is that we choose to treat people with respect and compassion.”
Najmul answered:
“Exactly. Our goal isn't to make everyone become like us. It's to choose kindness while respecting who they are.”
Eli added:
“Sometimes kindness simply means making someone feel that they have been heard.”
Najmul put his phone away. He realised that their project, ‘Friendship Has No Borders,’ was no longer just a school assignment. They were learning to practise its lessons in their everyday lives.
3. When Najmul Needed Help
The following day, Najmul received his checked mathematics assignment. Several answers were marked incorrect.
He felt disappointed. He had spent a lot of time solving the problems, but he had misunderstood some of the instructions.
He thought to himself, “I should have understood the directions more carefully.”
His classmate Farhan noticed his expression and approached him.
“Najmul, you look a little upset. Do you want to talk, or would you prefer some quiet time?”
Najmul thought for a moment before answering.
“I want to talk. I worked hard on this assignment, but I didn't understand the instructions properly.”
Farhan listened carefully. He did not laugh at Najmul or call him careless.
He said, “Making a mistake doesn't mean you haven't worked hard. Sometimes, before solving a problem, we need to make sure we understand what it is asking.”
Najmul asked, “Could you sit with me tomorrow and help me go through the instructions?”
“Of course,” Farhan replied. “We'll look at them one by one.”
Najmul felt relieved.
Farhan then added, “You helped me understand a difficult science topic last week. I remember that you never made me feel foolish when I got something wrong. I want to help you today.”
Najmul smiled. “So, are you trying to repay a debt?”
Farhan laughed.
“No. I'm not helping you because I owe you something. I'm helping because I want to be a good friend too.”
Najmul appreciated his answer.
He understood that accepting help was not a sign of weakness. Sometimes other people needed us, and sometimes we needed them. Neither situation made us less worthy of respect.
4. Eli Needed Help Too
That same week, Eli was preparing a presentation at his new school. He was working with Daniel and Adam.
They were creating slides for their project and including examples from the ‘One Small Act Challenge.’
Suddenly, a technical problem occurred on the computer. Several slides disappeared.
Eli tried opening the file repeatedly, but he could not recover all his work.
He became worried.
“I worked so hard on this,” he said. “What if we can't finish it on time?”
Daniel sat beside him.
“First, let's see whether we can recover the file. If we can't, we'll rebuild it together.”
Adam offered to help as well.
“I can organise the information. Daniel can work on the illustrations, and you can prepare the main message.”
Eli looked at both of them. He often tried to help others, but sometimes he believed that he should solve every problem by himself.
That day, he accepted their help.
The three boys worked together. After some time, they completed the presentation again. It looked a little different from the original, but its message was clear and meaningful.
That evening, Eli messaged Najmul:
“I had to accept Daniel and Adam's help today. I was worried at first, but working together made everything easier.”
Najmul replied:
“I'm glad you accepted their help. We don't always have to appear strong. Sometimes, admitting that we're struggling and allowing someone to work beside us takes courage.”
Eli wrote:
“That's true. Friendship isn't only about helping others. It's also about allowing others to help us when we need it.”
5. Reviewing the Small Act Challenge
The following week, Najmul's teacher organised a classroom activity to review the ‘One Small Act Challenge.’
The teacher asked the students, “Has anyone experienced something during this challenge that taught them a new lesson?”
Riya raised her hand.
She explained how Najmul had invited her to join his science group when she was new. That small invitation had helped her feel welcome at school.
“When I helped the younger student find his classroom,” Riya said, “I realised that we cannot solve every problem in someone's life, but we can help them feel that they are not alone.”
Farhan shared his experience too.
“Najmul helped me understand science without making me feel foolish. When I saw him upset about mathematics, I listened to him. I wasn't trying to repay him. I simply wanted to show him the same respect he had shown me.”
Other students shared their experiences.
One had helped a younger student with homework. Another had invited a classmate who was sitting alone to join a group. Someone else had thanked a school cleaner whose work often went unnoticed.
After listening to everyone, the teacher said:
“Kindness is not only about helping someone immediately. Sometimes, our good behaviour inspires another person to treat someone else with kindness. In this way, a school can become a place where people respect and support one another.”
A student then asked, “But what if we help someone and they never help us in return? Shouldn't we feel disappointed?”
The teacher replied:
“Feeling disappointed is natural. But kindness is not a business transaction in which we demand a guaranteed return. At the same time, kindness does not mean allowing someone to take advantage of us. If someone repeatedly exploits your help or treats you badly, you have the right to set boundaries.”
Najmul listened carefully.
He understood that being kind and protecting himself were not opposites. He could care about others while respecting his own needs.
6. Kindness Is Not a Debt
That evening, Najmul opened his journal and wrote:
“Today I understood that kindness is not a debt. When I help someone, I do not earn the right to demand their friendship, gratitude, obedience, or attention.
“I can help someone because the help is useful and I care about them. But if I'm tired, don't have enough time, or need to focus on another important responsibility, I can explain that honestly.
“Being a good friend doesn't mean being available every moment or solving every problem. It means helping respectfully when I can, being honest when I cannot, and accepting help without shame when I need it.”
He sent Eli a message.
Eli replied:
“I'm learning the same thing. Daniel and Adam helped me, but that doesn't mean I owe them a debt. I appreciate their help, and I'll help them when I can. Friendship isn't an account book.”
Najmul wrote:
“And when someone helps us, we should appreciate it. But we shouldn't assume that we now have to reveal all our private information or agree with everything they say.”
Eli answered:
“Exactly. Gratitude and independence can exist together. We can value someone's help while still maintaining our boundaries.”
7. A Small Good Deed Travels Further
A few days later, Riya noticed another student struggling in the library. He could not find the books he needed.
Riya asked, “Would you like some help?”
The student said yes, and she guided him to the correct shelf.
Najmul did not hear about this incident. Riya wasn't helping because she wanted him to notice or praise her. She simply believed that she could make someone's task easier.
Meanwhile, at Eli's school, Adam invited a new student to join the art group. He did not pressure the student or assume that he would definitely want to join.
Daniel helped a classmate organise information for a presentation. Eli also learned that when work became overwhelming, asking for help was better than struggling silently.
In this way, kindness continued to travel through different people's lives.
It was not a trophy that someone kept for themselves. It was a lesson people could carry forward through their actions.
8. Respecting Personal Boundaries
One evening, Najmul arrived home and was asked to help with a household task. At the same time, he needed to prepare for an examination the following day.
At first, he wondered whether he should stop studying and help immediately. He worried that people might consider him selfish if he could not help at once.
But he calmly explained his situation.
“Let me finish an hour of mathematics revision first, and then I'll help with the household work. If the task is urgent, please tell me, and we can work out another solution.”
His family understood and agreed on a time for both responsibilities.
Najmul felt relieved.
He realised that explaining his limits did not mean he didn't care about his family. Honest communication about time and responsibilities could prevent misunderstandings and resentment.
Eli learned the same lesson while working on his school project. When the workload became too large, he divided the responsibilities with Daniel and Adam.
He realised that being responsible did not mean doing everything alone. It meant understanding his role, communicating on time, and trusting others.
9. A New Understanding Beneath the Old Tree
That weekend, Najmul sat beneath the old tree and video-called Eli.
“Today I remembered what Farhan said,” Najmul explained. “When I was upset about mathematics, he listened to me. I had helped him with science before, but he wasn't helping me just to balance the account. He did it because he cared.”
Eli smiled.
“And Daniel and Adam helped me. If I had tried to do everything alone, we might not have finished the presentation on time.”
Najmul said, “We often think that being strong means never needing anyone. But now I think recognising our needs and accepting appropriate help are also signs of strength.”
Eli replied, “Yes. We can support one another, but we aren't responsible for solving every problem in another person's life. If someone faces a serious difficulty, encouraging them to seek help from a trusted adult or a qualified professional can also be important.”
Najmul nodded.
“And helping someone doesn't give us control over their life. We can offer support and advice, but we must respect their decisions and boundaries.”
Eli said, “That's the message of our project: helping with respect and accepting help with respect.”
They remained quiet for a moment. Both realised that their friendship was becoming more mature.
They were not merely talking about helping other people. They were learning that acknowledging their weaknesses, maintaining boundaries, and trusting others were also parts of friendship.
10. A New Promise of Friendship
That night, Najmul wrote in his journal:
“Today I understood that kindness doesn't mean being strong all the time. Sometimes we need support. Sometimes we need rest. Sometimes we need to say no to a request. None of these things makes us less kind.
“I will try to help others without expecting them to behave exactly as I wish. I will accept help without believing that I must give up my independence. I will communicate honestly about my responsibilities and respect the boundaries of others.”
At the same time, Eli wrote in his journal:
“Kindness sometimes returns to us unexpectedly. But we shouldn't treat it like a reward. When we treat others with respect, we help create an environment in which people can learn to support one another.
“I cannot be available every moment, and neither can Najmul. That doesn't mean our friendship is weak. Our responsibility is to communicate honestly, understand each other's circumstances, and allow one another the freedom to ask for help or say no.”
Then they made a shared promise over the phone:
“We will try to show kindness without expecting repayment. We will not feel ashamed to accept help when we need it. We will communicate honestly about our responsibilities and respect one another's boundaries. We will remember that nobody can solve every problem alone. We will not force others to be kind, but we will try to set an example of respect and compassion through our own actions.”
11. When Kindness Returned Again
A few days later, Najmul dropped his books at school. Before he could pick them all up, Riya and Farhan came over.
“Wait, we'll help you,” Farhan said.
The three of them picked up the books together.
Riya smiled. “It seems we're all learning to look out for one another. Someone helped me when I was new, and now I try to make sure that other people don't feel alone.”
Najmul smiled.
Later, he told Eli about the incident.
Eli said, “See? Sometimes kindness comes back to us. But even if nobody had helped you pick up those books today, your earlier good deeds would still have mattered.”
Najmul replied, “That's right. The value of a good deed isn't determined by what we receive in return. It also lies in how we choose to treat another person.”
Eli added, “And we never know how far the effect of one small act might travel in the future.”
12. The Final Lesson: Let Kindness Travel
That night, Najmul opened the final page of his journal and wrote:
“Kindness does not always return to us in the same form, from the same person, or at the same time. But when we treat people with care and respect, we help create a world in which kindness has more opportunities to grow.”
Eli wrote in his journal:
“We cannot demand that kindness return. We can only choose to let it travel through us.”
They understood that injustice, loneliness, misunderstandings, and pain would continue to exist in the world. One small good deed could not solve all these problems. But it could help a lonely person feel seen and valued. It could give someone the courage to talk about a difficulty. It could turn a misunderstanding into a conversation or help a new student feel that there was a place for them.
Sometimes, that small beginning could become the first step towards a greater change.
The friendship between Najmul and Eli taught them that kindness was not only about doing something for others. It was also about understanding personal limits, accepting help, communicating honestly, and respecting the freedom of others.
They knew they could not solve every problem in the world. Still, they could do their part—one person, one conversation, and one small step at a time.
Because making the world better does not always require an extraordinary act. Sometimes, the beginning is simply making one person's day a little less lonely.

My friend, the heart of this chapter is simple and powerful: be kind to others, accept help without shame, and never forget to respect your own boundaries. ❤️
