An Inn in the Forest
Blog – Part 6
The corridor of countless doors came to an end before a single archway carved from black stone.
Unlike the other passages, no lanterns burned here.
The darkness was complete.
Yet I found myself walking forward without hesitation, guided by something deeper than sight.
As I crossed the threshold, the silence changed.
It no longer felt empty.
It felt alive.
The chamber beyond was circular, its ceiling disappearing into darkness so profound that it seemed to contain the night sky itself.
In the very centre stood a quiet pool of perfectly still water.
Its surface reflected not the room around it, but countless stars that did not belong to any sky I had ever known.
The hooded figure remained at the entrance.
"You must walk alone from here," the gentle voice said.
"There are answers that no guide can carry for another soul."
I stepped toward the pool.
The closer I came, the clearer its impossible reflection became.
Among the stars, I saw faces.
Children smiling.
Old friends long forgotten.
Strangers whose kindness had changed lives without ever being remembered.
The water held no judgement.
It simply revealed.
Then, slowly, another face appeared.
It was my own.
But it was older.
Calmer.
Its eyes held neither fear nor regret.
Only understanding.
The reflection spoke, though its lips never moved.
"You have searched for the keeper of the inn."
"You have searched through forests, silence, memories, and shadows."
"But every path has been leading here."
"The keeper is not the owner of a place."
"The keeper is the guardian of every moment in which a soul chooses truth over fear, compassion over pride, and hope over despair."
As the final words settled into the stillness, the stars upon the water began to fade.
The chamber grew brighter.
Not because light entered from outside.
But because the darkness itself seemed to become transparent.
For the first time, I understood that the forest had never been meant to imprison travellers.
It existed to slow them down.
To remove the noise of the world until they could hear the quiet voice already waiting within themselves.
When I turned to thank the hooded guide, the entrance stood empty.
The figure had vanished without a sound.
Only the ancient compass remained upon the stone floor.
Its needle no longer pointed toward me.
It pointed toward the distant forest beyond the inn.
The journey was not ending.
It was beginning again.
I picked up the compass, took one final look at the chamber of silent stars, and walked back into the forest.
Behind me, the inn disappeared into the morning mist.
Ahead of me, another path waited—unknown, unwritten, and full of mysteries yet to be discovered.
