Ma al-hajah ila an taf‘ala dhalik?

What was the need to do such a thing?

Limadha tuhawwil hayat basitah ila hayat mali’ah bil-qalaq?

Why turn a peaceful life into one filled with worry?

Ji’ta ‘ala zahr hisan bi-kibriya’ wa amal,

You arrived on horseback with pride and hope.

Wa ash‘alta nur al-ahlam fi qulubina.

You lit the light of dreams within our hearts.

Kana kullu ibtisamah tabdu ka-fajr jadid,

Every smile seemed like the dawn of a new day.

Wa kullu kalimah hamalat wa‘dan bil-ghad.

Every word carried a promise of tomorrow.

Lakin yawman ma, rahalta ‘ala nafs al-hisan,

But one day, you departed on the very same horse.

Duna an taltafit ilayna.

Without even looking back at us.

Wa baqina nahnu ka’annana mu‘allaqun ‘ala shajarah,

And we remained as though hanging from a tree.

Nahmilu athqal al-huzn wa al-wahdah.

Carrying the weight of sorrow and loneliness.

Laysa hatha al-ta‘alluq mawtan,

This hanging is not death.

Bal huwa ramz lil-thiqah al-maksurah.

It is a symbol of broken trust.

Lakin al-shajarah tu‘allimuna al-sabr,

Yet the tree teaches us patience.

Fa ba‘da kull ‘asifah tuzhr marrah ukhra.

After every storm, it blooms once again.

Man yarhal yusbih dhikra,

Those who leave become memories.

Wa man yabqa yusbih aqwa.

Those who remain become stronger.
