Introduction
Farakka Barrage is one of the most important water-management structures associated with the Ganga River in eastern India. Located in Murshidabad district of West Bengal, it has an important connection with the wider Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system.
During the monsoon season, the importance of Farakka increases considerably because river levels and discharge can rise rapidly.
As of 2 September 2026, several parts of the wider Ganga basin continue to experience high-water pressure.
Official real-time flood monitoring information from Bihar showed elevated Ganga levels at several important locations on the morning of 2 September.
Among the reported readings were:
Buxar — 60.21 metres
Bhagalpur — 33.26 metres
Sultanganj — 35.84 metres
Kahalgaon — 31.68 metres
Sahibganj — 27.59 metres
Several of these locations were above their warning or danger thresholds.
This indicates that the present situation is not limited to one isolated location.
The wider Ganga system is experiencing significant water pressure.
Why Farakka Barrage Is Important
Farakka Barrage is important because it stands at a strategically significant point of the Ganga river system.
Its operation is connected with:
water management,
river flow,
the Bhagirathi-Hooghly system,
navigation,
irrigation,
and flood-related river management.
However, it is important to understand that a barrage cannot completely control a river as large and powerful as the Ganga.
The river receives water from a huge basin.
Rainfall, tributaries, sediment, river-channel conditions, upstream inflow and downstream water levels all influence the final situation.
Therefore, Farakka should never be assessed only by asking whether its gates are open or closed.
Water Level and Discharge
Water level and discharge are two different measurements.
Water level tells us how high the river surface is at a particular monitoring station.
Discharge tells us how much water is passing through a river section over a given period.
Discharge is commonly expressed in cubic feet per second, or cusecs.
For example:
100,000 cusecs means 100,000 cubic feet of water passing through a river section every second.
This illustrates how enormous the volume of water can become during a major monsoon event.
Why the Trend Matters
A single water-level figure does not tell the complete story.
We also need to know whether the river is:
rising,
falling,
or remaining steady.
If the river is rising quickly, the risk may increase.
If the river is falling, that is encouraging.
However, a falling river can remain dangerous if the level is still above the danger mark.
Therefore:
Falling water does not automatically mean that the danger has ended.
The Importance of Upstream Rainfall
The future situation at Farakka depends partly on rainfall upstream.
Heavy rainfall in the Ganga basin can increase inflow.
However, rainwater does not immediately reach Farakka.
It takes time to travel through the river system.
Therefore, rainfall today can affect downstream river levels over the following hours or days.
This is why weather forecasts and river-level monitoring must be considered together.
Role of Tributaries
The Ganga is part of a huge interconnected river system.
Important tributaries include:
Gandak,
Kosi,
Ghaghra,
Son,
Punpun,
and many smaller rivers.
During the monsoon, these rivers can contribute large quantities of water.
If the Ganga is already at a high level and tributaries continue contributing water, downstream pressure can increase.
River Erosion
River erosion is one of the most serious problems associated with high river levels.
Flooding means water spreads across land.
Erosion means the river itself removes land.
This can destroy:
homes,
farmland,
roads,
schools,
markets,
religious structures,
electricity infrastructure,
and ferry points.
For families living beside the Ganga, erosion can be even more devastating than temporary flooding because the lost land may never return.
Why "Open All Gates" Is Not a Simple Solution
During floods, people sometimes say:
"Open all the barrage gates and the flood will end."
The reality is much more complicated.
Water released through the barrage eventually moves downstream.
If downstream water levels are already high, the capacity of the river to safely carry additional water must also be considered.
Therefore, gate management requires analysis of:
upstream inflow,
barrage level,
downstream level,
river capacity,
flood risk,
barrage safety,
sediment conditions,
and other hydraulic factors.
Gate operation is therefore a technical decision.
Conditions in Bihar
Bihar remains an important part of the current Ganga flood picture.
The official real-time monitoring data on 2 September showed elevated levels at several Ganga stations.
Sultanganj, Kahalgaon and Sahibganj were among the locations where levels were reported above danger thresholds.
Bhagalpur was also above its warning level.
This indicates that high-water pressure extends through a significant part of the lower Ganga system.
Conditions in West Bengal
West Bengal also contains large populations living near rivers and floodplains.
Murshidabad and the Farakka region are particularly sensitive to both flooding and river erosion.
Residents should pay attention to:
riverbank cracks,
rapid erosion,
embankment conditions,
unusual water movement,
road conditions,
and local administrative warnings.
Safety Advice for Local Residents
People living near the Ganga should remain alert.
They should:
Keep important documents in waterproof packaging.
Keep mobile phones charged.
Store drinking water safely.
Keep dry food available.
Protect necessary medicines.
Move livestock to safer locations if required.
Keep children away from the river.
Avoid unstable riverbanks.
Never attempt to cross strong currents.
Follow evacuation instructions from local authorities.
Electricity Safety
Floodwater can create serious electrical hazards.
People should never touch:
fallen electrical wires,
submerged electrical equipment,
damaged poles,
or exposed electrical connections.
If water enters a house, electrical safety instructions from the authorities should be followed.
Avoid Rumours
Flood conditions often produce rumours on social media.
Old photographs and videos may be presented as current.
Old water-level figures may also be circulated as today's data.
People should therefore verify information through official sources before sharing it.
A responsible flood report should include:
date + time + station + water level + danger level + trend + discharge.
What to Watch During the Next 24–72 Hours
The following indicators will be important:
Ganga water level
Rising or falling trend
Upstream rainfall
Tributary inflow
Barrage operations
Downstream water level
River erosion
Embankment condition
Local government warnings
These factors together provide a much clearer picture than any single number.
Today's Overall Assessment
As of 2 September 2026, the wider Ganga basin remains under significant high-water pressure.
Several important Ganga monitoring stations in Bihar remain above warning or danger levels.
Therefore, the Farakka region should continue to be monitored carefully.
The situation should neither be exaggerated nor ignored.
The most sensible approach is:
Stay alert, remain prepared and rely on verified information.
Final Message
Farakka Barrage is an important part of the Ganga river system, but it is only one component of a much larger natural and hydraulic network.
The present monsoon situation demonstrates how closely connected rainfall, tributaries, river levels, discharge, erosion and human settlements are.
For people living near Farakka and other Ganga-side areas, the message is simple:
Do not panic, but do not become careless.
Keep emergency preparations ready.
Stay away from dangerous riverbanks.
Do not enter fast-moving floodwater.
Protect children and vulnerable family members.
Follow official instructions.
And remember:
Accurate information can save lives.
