Introduction: Why Does Mexico Awaken Our Curiosity?
Curiosity begins with a simple question: “What is this country really like?”
Mexico is much more than a name on a map. It is a country where ancient civilizations, colonial history, modern industry, Indigenous traditions, global commerce, religion, art, music and contemporary life exist side by side.
When people hear the word Mexico, they may think of ancient pyramids, mariachi music, tacos, beautiful beaches, the Day of the Dead, football, deserts or the enormous Mexico City. Yet none of these images alone can explain Mexico.
Mexico is simultaneously ancient and modern, Indigenous and global, agricultural and industrial, mountainous and coastal, Catholic in historical tradition and increasingly religiously diverse.
Its history stretches from the great civilizations of Mesoamerica through Spanish conquest and colonialism, independence, revolution, modernization and globalization.
The World Bank identifies Mexico as one of the world's largest economies and the second-largest economy in Latin America. Its economy is diversified across manufacturing, agriculture, energy, tourism, services and international trade.
This diversity is precisely what makes Mexico fascinating.
1. Mexico at a Glance
Mexico, officially the United Mexican States, is located in the southern part of North America.
It borders the United States to the north and Guatemala and Belize to the southeast. The Pacific Ocean lies to the west and south, while the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea lie to the east.
Mexico is therefore simultaneously:
a North American country;
a Latin American country;
a Pacific and Atlantic country;
a Spanish-speaking nation;
a country with numerous Indigenous cultures and languages;
a major manufacturing center;
an agricultural producer;
an energy-producing country;
a tourism destination;
and a bridge between different economic and cultural regions.
Its capital, Mexico City, is one of the world's largest metropolitan areas and an important political, cultural, educational and economic center.
Mexico contains 31 states plus Mexico City as a federal entity.
2. Geography of Mexico
Mexico's geography is extraordinarily diverse.
Its northern regions contain extensive deserts and semi-arid landscapes. Central Mexico is dominated by highlands and mountain systems, while the south and southeast contain tropical forests, coastal plains and the Yucatán Peninsula.
Major mountain systems include the Sierra Madre Occidental, Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre del Sur.
Mexico is also located in a geologically active region and contains important volcanoes such as Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl.
The country's geography has influenced settlement, agriculture, transportation, trade and political development throughout history.
3. The Deserts of Northern Mexico
The Chihuahuan Desert and Sonoran Desert are among the most important dry regions.
At first sight, these landscapes may appear harsh and empty.
They are not.
They contain highly specialized ecosystems where plants and animals have adapted to heat and limited rainfall.
Cacti, desert shrubs, reptiles, birds and mammals form part of these remarkable ecosystems.
4. The Yucatán Peninsula
The Yucatán Peninsula is famous for limestone geology, underground water systems, cenotes, tropical landscapes, Caribbean beaches and ancient Maya archaeological sites.
Places such as Cancún, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Mérida have become internationally important tourism destinations.
The region also preserves a living Maya cultural heritage.
5. Ancient Civilizations of Mexico
Long before Europeans arrived, Mexico was home to sophisticated civilizations.
Among the most important were:
the Olmec;
Maya;
Teotihuacan civilization;
Zapotec;
Mixtec;
Toltec;
Mexica or Aztec.
These civilizations developed agriculture, architecture, astronomy, mathematics, political institutions, religious systems and artistic traditions.
They were not one single civilization. They were different societies that flourished at different times and places.
6. The Maya
The Maya civilization was one of the great civilizations of ancient America.
Maya societies developed advanced calendars, writing systems, mathematics, astronomy and monumental architecture.
Important Maya sites in Mexico include Chichén Itzá, Palenque, Uxmal, Tulum and Calakmul.
The Maya are not simply a subject of ancient history.
Maya peoples continue to live in Mexico today, maintaining languages, traditions, food, crafts and cultural identities.
7. The Mexica and Tenochtitlan
The Mexica, often called the Aztecs, established Tenochtitlan on an island in Lake Texcoco.
The city became a major political and economic center.
When the Spanish arrived, Tenochtitlan was one of the largest cities in the Americas.
Its markets, temples, roads and canals demonstrated a sophisticated urban civilization.
8. The Spanish Conquest
Hernán Cortés arrived in the region in 1519.
The Spanish did not conquer the Mexica alone. They formed alliances with Indigenous groups who opposed Mexica domination.
European diseases, particularly smallpox, also caused devastating population losses.
In 1521, Tenochtitlan fell.
Spanish colonial rule then transformed political institutions, religion, language, land ownership and economic systems.
Yet Indigenous traditions survived.
Modern Mexican culture emerged through centuries of interaction between Indigenous, European and African influences.
9. New Spain
For approximately three centuries, much of present-day Mexico was part of the Spanish colony of New Spain.
Mexico City became the center of Spanish power.
Mining, especially silver mining, became extremely important.
Agriculture, ranching, trade, religious institutions, education and urban centers expanded.
Mexican silver entered international trade networks connecting the Americas, Europe and Asia.
However, colonial society was deeply unequal.
Indigenous communities experienced exploitation and loss of autonomy and land.
African people were also brought to the colony through slavery.
The colonial period therefore left both cultural achievements and painful historical legacies.
10. Mexican Independence
Mexico's independence movement began in 1810.
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla became one of the central figures associated with the beginning of the struggle.
After years of conflict, Mexico achieved independence in 1821.
But independence did not immediately bring stability.
The young nation faced political conflicts, economic difficulties, regional divisions, military instability and foreign intervention.
The nineteenth century became one of the most turbulent periods in Mexican history.
11. Mexico and the United States
Mexico's relationship with the United States has been central to its history.
The nineteenth-century Mexican-American War resulted in Mexico losing large territories.
The modern border is therefore the product of war, diplomacy, treaties, migration and economic relationships.
Today, the United States is Mexico's most important economic partner.
The two countries are deeply connected through trade, manufacturing, migration, tourism, family relationships and culture.
12. The Mexican Revolution
The Mexican Revolution began in 1910.
Porfirio Díaz had ruled for many years. His period brought modernization but also political repression and significant inequality.
Francisco Madero challenged Díaz.
The revolutionary struggle later involved figures such as Emiliano Zapata, Pancho Villa, Venustiano Carranza and Álvaro Obregón.
Zapata became especially associated with land reform and the rights of peasants.
The Revolution transformed Mexican politics, land policy, labor rights, education and national identity.
The Constitution of 1917 became particularly important because it included important social and economic principles.
13. Mexico's Economy
Mexico has one of the world's major economies.
Its strength lies partly in diversification.
Important sectors include:
automobiles;
electronics;
aerospace;
petroleum;
mining;
agriculture;
tourism;
finance;
telecommunications;
retail;
construction;
food processing;
professional services.
Mexico has become one of the most important manufacturing centers in the Americas.
14. Manufacturing and Nearshoring
Automobile manufacturing is particularly important.
International companies manufacture vehicles and components in Mexico for domestic and foreign markets.
Mexico's proximity to the United States gives it a major competitive advantage.
The concept of nearshoring has increased interest in Mexico because companies increasingly seek production locations closer to major consumer markets.
The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, is an important foundation for North American trade.
However, Mexico must continue improving infrastructure, energy supply, water availability, security, education and technical skills to maximize these opportunities.
15. Agriculture
Mexico remains an important agricultural country.
Major products include:
maize;
wheat;
beans;
tomatoes;
avocados;
peppers;
fruits;
vegetables;
coffee;
sugar;
livestock products.
Maize has special cultural importance.
It is not merely a crop.
It is deeply connected with Indigenous history and Mexican identity.
16. Tourism
Tourism is one of Mexico's most visible economic strengths.
Its attractions include:
beaches;
archaeological sites;
colonial cities;
museums;
food;
festivals;
natural landscapes;
cultural traditions.
Mexico City, Cancún, Tulum, Oaxaca, Mérida, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos and many other destinations attract visitors from around the world.
Tourism creates employment and foreign exchange but also creates challenges involving environmental sustainability, water consumption and pressure on local communities.
17. Poverty and Inequality
Mexico's economic story includes both progress and inequality.
Some regions have highly developed industries and prosperous cities.
Other rural and Indigenous regions experience higher levels of poverty and weaker infrastructure.
According to World Bank reporting, Mexico's multidimensional poverty rate declined from 43.2% in 2016 to 36.3% in 2022.
This represents important progress.
Nevertheless, inequality remains a major challenge.
Economic growth does not automatically guarantee equal opportunity.
18. Education in Mexico
Education is crucial to Mexico's future.
The education system includes:
early childhood education;
primary education;
secondary education;
upper secondary education;
vocational education;
universities;
postgraduate education.
Educational access has expanded, but quality and opportunity remain unequal across regions and social groups.
According to OECD data, the proportion of 25–34-year-olds without upper-secondary education declined from 49% in 2019 to 41% in 2024.
This represents progress but also shows that important challenges remain.
19. Higher Education
Mexico has many universities and higher-education institutions.
The National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM, is one of the country's most important universities and research institutions.
The Instituto Politécnico Nacional is especially important in science and engineering.
Private universities also play a major role.
However, access to advanced education remains unequal.
Increasing postgraduate education and research capacity could help Mexico move further toward a knowledge-based economy.
20. Science, Technology and Innovation
Mexico has considerable scientific and technological potential.
Important future areas include:
artificial intelligence;
software;
biotechnology;
aerospace;
medicine;
renewable energy;
agricultural technology;
telecommunications;
advanced manufacturing.
The challenge is to combine universities, industry, research institutions, investment and skilled human resources.
If successful, Mexico could become not only a manufacturing center but also a major innovation center.
21. Languages of Mexico
Spanish is the dominant language.
However, Mexico is also home to many Indigenous languages.
Nahuatl, Maya languages, Mixtec, Zapotec, Tzotzil, Tzeltal and many others remain part of Mexican cultural life.
Language carries history, memory, identity and traditional knowledge.
Protecting Indigenous languages is therefore not simply a linguistic issue.
It is a question of cultural preservation.
22. Indigenous Peoples
Indigenous peoples are fundamental to Mexico's identity.
Their ancestors contributed to agriculture, architecture, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, art, language and food culture.
Yet Indigenous communities have historically faced discrimination, poverty, land disputes and unequal access to public services.
Modern Mexico increasingly recognizes Indigenous rights and identities, but major challenges remain.
Indigenous Mexico is not simply a memory from the past.
It is a living part of the present.
23. Religion in Mexico
Mexico has historically been predominantly Catholic.
According to Mexico's 2020 census, approximately 78% of the population identified as Catholic.
However, Mexico is becoming more religiously diverse.
Protestant and evangelical communities have grown.
There are also Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Indigenous-traditional and other religious communities.
A significant number of Mexicans also identify as having no religion.
According to the 2020 census, around 10.2 million people were recorded in categories involving no religion or atheism.
24. Catholicism and the Virgin of Guadalupe
Catholicism has deeply influenced Mexican culture.
Churches, pilgrimages, religious festivals, saints' celebrations and family ceremonies remain important.
The Virgin of Guadalupe has an especially powerful place in Mexican religious and cultural identity.
For many people, she represents both faith and Mexican identity.
However, not every Mexican practices religion in the same way.
Some are deeply religious, some identify culturally as Catholic, while others belong to different religions or have no religious affiliation.
25. Religious Diversity and Secularism
Modern Mexico is a secular state.
This means that the state does not officially belong to a particular religion.
Mexico's history of church-state conflict contributed to this political tradition.
Today, Catholic traditions coexist with Protestant, evangelical, Jewish, Muslim, Indigenous and nonreligious identities.
This demonstrates that national identity can contain many different forms of belief.
26. Mexican Food
Mexican cuisine is one of Mexico's greatest cultural contributions to the world.
Famous foods include:
tacos;
tortillas;
tamales;
mole;
enchiladas;
pozole;
guacamole;
beans;
chili-based dishes;
seafood;
many maize-based foods.
But Mexican cuisine is not a single cuisine.
Northern Mexico has different culinary traditions from Oaxaca.
Yucatán has different flavors from central Mexico.
Coastal regions emphasize seafood.
Food is therefore both nourishment and cultural memory.
27. Day of the Dead
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is one of Mexico's most famous traditions.
Families remember deceased relatives through altars known as ofrendas.
These may contain:
photographs;
candles;
flowers;
food;
personal objects.
The tradition contains both Indigenous and Catholic historical influences.
Its deeper meaning is remembrance.
It expresses the idea that people who have died remain present in family memory.
28. Mexican Music
Mariachi is perhaps Mexico's most internationally recognizable musical tradition.
Other important styles include:
ranchera;
norteño;
banda;
son;
regional folk music;
pop;
rock;
hip-hop.
Mexican music often expresses love, migration, family, patriotism, faith, heartbreak and social struggle.
29. Mexican Literature and Art
Mexico has produced internationally respected writers and artists.
Octavio Paz won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Juan Rulfo's Pedro Páramo became an influential work of Latin American literature.
In art, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros became famous for monumental murals.
Frida Kahlo became one of the world's best-known Mexican artists.
Her work explored identity, pain, relationships, the body and Mexican culture.
30. Mexico's Cities
Mexico City is the political and cultural capital.
Guadalajara is famous for culture, mariachi, tequila, business and technology.
Monterrey is an important industrial and business center.
Mérida is strongly connected with Maya heritage.
Oaxaca is internationally recognized for Indigenous culture, food, crafts, festivals and colonial architecture.
Together, these cities demonstrate that Mexico is not culturally uniform.
31. Migration
Migration has played a major role in Mexican history.
Millions of Mexicans have migrated to the United States for work, family, education and other reasons.
Mexican communities have become an important part of American society.
At the same time, Mexico has become a transit and destination country for migrants from other parts of Latin America and beyond.
Migration therefore affects Mexico's economy, diplomacy, border policy and humanitarian responsibilities.
32. Security and Organized Crime
Organized crime and drug trafficking have created serious security challenges in parts of Mexico.
The consequences can include violence, insecurity, corruption and pressure on local communities and institutions.
However, Mexico should not be defined only by criminality.
It is a country of more than 130 million people, containing millions of families, students, businesses, farmers, workers, scientists, artists and communities.
Crime is a serious challenge, but it is not the complete identity of Mexico.
33. Environmental Challenges
Mexico contains extraordinary biodiversity.
But it also faces:
deforestation;
water shortages;
pollution;
biodiversity loss;
urban expansion;
climate change;
coastal degradation.
The country has considerable solar and wind energy potential.
The future challenge is to combine economic development with environmental protection.
34. Water and Climate Change
Water may become one of Mexico's most important strategic concerns.
Some regions have abundant rainfall, while others experience severe shortages.
Agriculture and cities require enormous quantities of water.
Climate change could intensify drought, heat, flooding and storms.
Mexico therefore needs stronger water management, conservation, efficient irrigation, recycling and sustainable urban planning.
35. Women and Society
Women have played important roles in Mexican politics, education, science, art, business, agriculture and family life.
Women's educational participation has improved significantly.
Nevertheless, challenges remain involving:
employment;
wages;
unpaid care work;
political representation;
violence;
access to economic resources.
Gender equality will remain an important part of Mexico's development.
36. Young People and the Future
Mexico's young population represents a major opportunity.
If young people receive good education, healthcare, technical skills, employment and digital opportunities, they can become a powerful engine of economic transformation.
But if they lack access to education and employment, social problems can become more difficult.
Investment in youth is therefore investment in Mexico's future.
37. Mexico's Global Cultural Influence
Mexican culture has a global reach.
Mexican food is consumed worldwide.
Mexican music has international audiences.
Mexican literature and cinema have influenced global culture.
Mexican art is displayed in major museums.
Mexican festivals have inspired communities in many other countries.
Mexico is therefore not merely a receiver of global culture.
It is also a major creator of global culture.
38. Mexico's Future
Mexico's future will depend on several major trends:
Manufacturing
Mexico may become even more important in North American production.
Technology
Artificial intelligence and digital industries could create new opportunities.
Education
Improved educational quality could increase productivity and social mobility.
Renewable Energy
Solar and wind power could become increasingly important.
Urbanization
Mexican cities will continue to expand.
Tourism
Cultural and natural attractions will remain major assets.
Climate Change
Water, agriculture, heat, storms and coastal vulnerability will require increasing attention.
39. What Can the World Learn from Mexico?
Mexico teaches several important lessons.
Civilizations can survive transformation.
Ancient cultures continue to influence modern society.
Geography matters.
Mountains, deserts, oceans and borders shape economic possibilities.
Economic integration creates opportunity.
Mexico's relationship with North America has transformed its manufacturing sector.
Economic growth does not automatically eliminate inequality.
Development must include social inclusion.
Education is a long-term investment.
Culture can be an economic asset.
Food, music, art, history and tourism can simultaneously create identity and economic opportunity.
Religious diversity can coexist with cultural continuity.
40. Final Reflection
Mexico is much more than a country on a map.
It is a civilization with many layers.
It is the land of ancient cities and modern megacities.
It is a country of deserts and tropical forests.
It is agricultural and industrial.
It has a deep Catholic heritage while becoming increasingly religiously diverse.
It is Spanish-speaking while also preserving numerous Indigenous languages.
It is deeply connected to the United States while maintaining its own distinctive Latin American identity.
Its history includes conquest, colonialism, independence, revolution, modernization and globalization.
Its problems are serious.
Its potential is enormous.
Its culture is extraordinary.
Its future remains open.
Perhaps the best way to understand Mexico is not to ask whether it belongs to the ancient world or the modern world.
It belongs to both.
The pyramids of Teotihuacan belong to Mexico.
The Maya heritage belongs to Mexico.
The colonial cathedrals belong to Mexico.
The revolutionary history belongs to Mexico.
The modern universities belong to Mexico.
The factories producing vehicles for global markets belong to Mexico.
Its food, families, festivals, music, literature, art, faith, Indigenous languages and technological ambitions all belong to the same national story.
Mexico teaches us that a nation is not merely a political boundary.
A nation is memory.
A nation is geography.
A nation is language.
A nation is food.
A nation is faith and doubt.
A nation is struggle.
A nation is creativity.
A nation is the accumulated experience of generations.
The curious mind begins with one question:
“What is Mexico?”
But after exploring its geography, history, economy, education, religion and culture, the question becomes larger:
“What can Mexico become?”
Perhaps that question has no final answer.
And perhaps that is exactly what makes Mexico so fascinating.

Nearshoring
National Autonomous University of Mexico
Instituto Politécnico Nacional
27. Day of the Dead
Día de los Muertos
