The Road I Mistook for Light — English–Urdu Version
Writing
The Road I Mistook for Light
Poem / نظم
English
Why did I become a fool,
Though knowledge lived within my mind?
I knew the road I should have taken,
Yet left the truthful path behind.
I saw a road that seemed so bright,
And called its brightness guiding light;
But perhaps it was merely noise,
A crowded world dressed up as right.
So many people walked that way,
And therefore I believed it true;
I heard the footsteps of the crowd,
But lost the voice that spoke within me.
I had knowledge, but lacked wisdom;
I had eyes, but failed to see.
I knew the roads before my footsteps,
Yet could not choose the road for me.
Now I stand beside the crossroads,
Looking back at days gone by.
I wonder if the road I've lost
Can ever meet my path again.
Can yesterday return to me?
Can lost moments rise once more?
Can someone who has walked astray
Become the person they were before?
Perhaps the old road cannot return,
Perhaps the past is truly gone;
But every mistake may leave a lesson
From which a wiser road is born.
Knowledge tells us what is possible;
Wisdom asks what should be done.
Knowledge shows us many doorways;
Wisdom chooses the proper one.
So I will not follow crowds
Simply because they seem so right.
I will question every shining road
Before I call its glow the light.
And if I lose my way again,
I will stop and ask my soul:
“Where am I going? Why this journey?
Is this really my chosen road?”
Perhaps the road I lost is gone,
But I have not lost my direction.
I can carry yesterday's lessons
Into tomorrow's new beginning.
I was foolish—perhaps that is true,
But foolishness need not be the end.
The person who learns from mistakes
Becomes wiser than the one who pretends.
Now I do not fear the darkness;
I have learned to listen there.
For every brightness is not light,
And every silence is not despair.
The truest road may be quiet,
It may be difficult and slow;
But perhaps upon that lonely road
I will finally myself know.
If I cannot recover the lost road,
I will not surrender my way.
For wisdom can be born from errors,
And a new dawn can follow yesterday.
Life is not only a story
Of roads that we have wrongly crossed;
It is also the story of returning,
Learning, and becoming—not being lost.

Philosophical Analysis /
The deepest question in this writing is:
“Why did I choose the wrong path even though I possessed knowledge?”
The answer begins with the distinction between knowledge and wisdom.
Knowledge tells us what exists, what may happen, and what choices are available.
Wisdom asks a deeper question:
Which road should I actually choose?
A person may know that anger is destructive and still become angry.
A person may know that greed creates suffering and still chase wealth without limits.
Therefore, knowledge is not automatically wisdom.
The Illusion of Light /
The metaphor of light is central to this reflection.
Light normally represents truth, knowledge, hope and clarity.
But something can appear bright without being true.
Popularity can shine.
Money can shine.
Fame can shine.
Social approval can shine.
But none of these automatically proves wisdom.
A road crowded with people may simply be a popular road.
It does not necessarily mean that it is the right road.
The Crowd and the Individual /
Human beings naturally look at others for guidance.
If thousands of people are walking in one direction, we may assume they know where they are going.
But history teaches us that crowds can be wrong.
Therefore:
Popularity is not proof of truth.
The poem's “wrong road” can therefore represent a life lived according to social expectations rather than personal conscience.
Regret /
Regret is painful because it connects the present with an unchangeable past.
We often ask:
But regret can have two forms.
One destroys us.
The other teaches us.
If regret says, “I am worthless because I made a mistake,” it becomes destructive.
But if it says, “I made a mistake, and I will learn from it,” it becomes wisdom.
Can the Lost Road Be Found?
Perhaps not always.
Lost time cannot be recovered.
Some opportunities disappear forever.
Some relationships cannot return to their former condition.
But a lost road does not mean a lost future.
Perhaps we cannot return to the exact road we left.
But we can create a new road with the wisdom gained from the old one.
This is the philosophy of a second beginning.
Darkness as a Teacher /
Darkness is normally associated with fear and uncertainty.
But darkness can also force us to listen.
When external noise becomes silent, the inner voice may become clearer.
Therefore, darkness is not always the enemy of light.
Sometimes darkness teaches us what real light means.
The Courage to Change Direction /
One of the greatest forms of wisdom is the courage to admit:
Turning back from a wrong road is not necessarily failure.
Sometimes continuing on the wrong road simply because we have already invested years in it is the greater failure.
The important question is not:
The better question is:
Knowledge, Wisdom and the Next Step /
We do not always need to know the entire future.
Sometimes we only need enough clarity to choose the next step.
The past cannot be rewritten.
But the future can still be influenced.
Therefore, the most important question eventually changes from:
“Why did I choose the wrong road?”
to:
“Now that I understand, which road should I choose?”
That is the beginning of wisdom.
Final Reflection /
Perhaps the lost road does not need to be recovered exactly as it was.
Perhaps the real purpose of the journey is to become wiser because we once lost our way.
Do not confuse noise with truth.
Do not confuse popularity with wisdom.
Do not confuse brightness with light.
Do not confuse a mistake with the end of life.
A wrong road can become a teacher.
A painful memory can become wisdom.
A lost direction can become the beginning of a new journey.
And sometimes the greatest light is discovered only after we admit that we were walking in the wrong direction.
